Are you tired of being conned? I sure am.
Let's start off with where I believe it all began, or at least was more pronounced, Redemption Island. While some could argue that it started in Samoa, with the casting of Russell, I cannot claim complete knowledge of the season because I deleted it before finishing it. Between watching Russell and Shambo (holy sh*t), I thought I was in absolute hell. Anyway, back to RI.
A whole game concept was introduced by the producers to aid Boston Rob in his win. Redemption Island was to help him return to the game in case he got voted off. You may argue that Russell could equally have benefited from the same, but Russell had never been a challenge beast, unlike Rob. There was also the apparent casting of arguably the dumbest group of castaways, in the Ometepe tribe (except Francesca and Kristina), in the history of survivor, who willingly and effortlessly gifted Rob the win. And even if Rob had initially joined Zapatera, well guess what, RI was conveniently waiting for him.
Now, RI, in my opinion, was a stinker of a season, the worst in my opinion. I watched it to its unfortunate conclusion, hoping that the brain dead morons on Ometepe would somehow conjure up an independent thought and vote off Rob. But, alas, this never happened. Then I hoped that Phillip would in some way reveal that he was just playing a crazy character, and win the jury's vote in a landslide. Again, this did not happen. Watching grown men and women being told whom to talk to and what to eat was just painful to watch. And then to hear Jeff declare Rob the best survivor of all time, despite having won it on his fourth attempt, was a complete slap in the face.
The producers rigged the show to give the public what the producers want, and because they know what's good for us, we would lap it all up and ask for more. But they weren't done. So they gave us SP, with more returning players, and because we hadn't had enough of Russell, they gave us Brandon. Next, they wanted us to experience the unparalleled joy of watching a character more vile than Russell, so they gave us Colton in One World. But, they figured Colton could only be enjoyed in two doses, so they fake pulled him out of the game, with a supposed case of appendicitis. Then, because they knew how much we loved and adored Blossom, and hang on to her every word, they enlisted her services, as well as those of some random guy, to tell us that Colton makes for great television, and prepare us for the impending doom. Survivor Philippines.
They then took an often mentioned request by survivor fans to have a second chances season and just spat on it. So, instead of having a bona fide season of only returning castaways, who had left the game through varied reasons, they will have only three returning players who had left the game because of only one reason; medical evacuations. It's been a ruse all along, just like RI was. Once they had brainstormed the idea to create a new detestable character, and Colton fell on their laps, S24 and S25 were set in motion. The appendicitis. Fake. The medical evacuation. Fake. The reason behind the three returning players. Fake.
And now, two seasons have been fashioned around Colton, just like that. Unfortunately, Mike Skupin and the other returning player, are simply a part of the facade, and yet a second chances season could have been executed brilliantly. The producers clearly do as they please. And we are just along for the ride. I guess I have to switch my allegiance to American Ninja Warrior.
