#5 Augustus

He is a major figure in world history. Augustus was the first emperor of the Roman empire. He was named adopted son and heir of his great uncle Julius Caesar. He came into his inheritance after Caesar's assassination in 44 BC. He formed a political alliance known as the Second Triumvirate with Mark Antony and Lepidus. The Triumvirate was torn apart when he disposed of Lepidus and defeated Antony at the battle of Actium to become sole ruler which became known as the Roman Empire. Augustus's reign had massive changes for Rome, it created a period with peace and prosperity known as "Pax Romana". He fostered the arts, rebuilt most of Rome established many public services, etc. Augustus laid the foundations for a regime that lasted nearly fifteen hundred years and is considered by many to be Rome's greatest emperor. After his death he was declared a god by the senate and has inspired many cultural and artistic works including books, statues, films, tv, videogames, etc.

He or she is one of the most famous and recognizable entities of all time. The concept of Death as a sentient entity or being has been a part of many cultures and society since the beginning of civilization. From the ancient Angel of Death to the Grim Reaper which came about in the 15th century Death has been a popular character in many myths, legends, and pop culture for thousands of years. Death is usually depicted as a skeletal figure that carries a large scythe and is often cloaked in black. There are many different ways as to how death is portrayed. Sometimes death is there to warn people they are going to die, sometimes to escort people to the afterlife, sometimes a villianous figure that kills people that can be tricked or bargained with, sometimes a silly cartoon character. Death has appeared numerous times in books, films, tv, paintings, cartoons, drawings, comics, videogames, advertisements, etc.

#2 Satan

He is one of the notorious and infamous figures of all time. Satan is viewed as the ultimate powerful form of evil that is the enemy of God and mankind. He goes by many names "The Devil" and "Lucifer" Satan has been a part of myth, legend, and pop culture for thousands of years. According to the many stories he was one of God's angels who rebelled and was kicked out and banished to hell. Satan has been a prominent figure in many biblical stories (Adam and Eve, Job, tempting Jesus) prominent figure in myths and legends (Faust) He is often depicted as a man with horns, a pitchfork, and a tail. For many centuries people really believed that Satan was an entity that roamed the earth spreading evil and causing destruction. He was often used in political and social conflicts where there were claims of people being influenced by him or worshipping him. People who were accused of being associated with him, were often burned, hanged, drowned, beheaded, etc. Even in the 20th/21st century Satan is an ubiquitous figure in pop culture often used as a villain. He has appeared in pop culture more times than almost any person or character. He has appeared in books, costumes, films, tv, comics, cartoons,paintings, videogames, etc.

My thoughts on this ranking:

This ranking was not easy. I really wanted to have a ranking that incorporated many different kinds of iconic figure from ancient history to icons of the 21st century. I didn't want the ranking to be a bunch of stupid celebrities but i also didn't want it to be a history ranking either. Some of the icons who made the list especially the ones who were at the bottom of the list were not necessarily huge icons but people who I put to represent a certain a time period or area of society or culture. Some of the icons were huge and literally changed and shaped culture and society. The bottom 250 icons are more so pop culture-centric icons whereas the upper half especially when I got past 200 is dominated by historical figures and legendary characters. I know that some people got mad because their favorite celebrities didn't make as high as they thought but if truth be told people like Oprah and Britney who are huge modern day icons but in the grand scheme of things have considerable less impact than kings, queens, presidents, literary giants, scientists, religious figures, etc. I know that some people find that boring but i don't care and i didn't make the ranking to entertain people. That's it.
