The list is pretty diverse so it does include pro-athletes like wrestlers and soccer players. It also includes non-american icons who are not well known in the U.S. however there aren't a ton of that particular category because my knowledge on that is limited.

Destiny's Child had a string of hit songs and albums and eventually became the most successful girl group of all time. By the early 00's Beyonce began to branch out as a solo artist, starring in films and had fans going crazy over her debut album Dangerously in Love which sold millions and earned her five grammy awards. After this she continued to release hit after hit and got hooked up with hip hop king Jay-Z making them a music supercouple. By the end of the decade her fame increased even more with the release of her third solo album I am...Sasha Fierce and it's ubiquitious huge single Single Ladies. Single Ladies became a female anthem of the 2000's and kicked off the first major dance craze of the new millenium. In 2010 she won a record breaking six grammys in one night. Beyonce has become an icon of the past decade with her commercial and critical success and a role model and inspiration for millions of women around the world.

This extends it beyond pop culture, in which case I'd guess Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and countless historical figures like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Franklin, JFK, FDR, Reagan, MLK, Elizabeth I, Henry VIII, Cleopatra etc., would probably deserve spots, in which case the porn star should definitely not be on here. And Jesus FTW!

Who better to represent that then the woman who was the star of the most famous porno of all time. Deep Throat was huge and is not just well known to people who watch porn. There have been many biographies written about Lovelace and there's a bio-pic film beig made about her life.

He came out in the mid 90's at a time when west coast artists like Dre and Tupac dominanted the hip hop charts. His presence on the charts made the New York hip hop scene more mainstream and helped pave the way for east coast artists that would follow in his wake. Biggie's songs were real, raw and gritty and showed the world of the violence of the streets, his drug dealing past and the materialism of the hip-hop culture. His murder sent shockwaves in the hip hop community and propelled him to legendary status as it came not long after fellow hip hop icon Tupac as it shed a light on the brutal East/West Coast feud taking away two of it's greatest artists. Biggie since then has been an inspiration to many hip hop artists with his songs being sampled in the years since and many biographies written of his life along with a bio-pic film in 2009.

Angelina Jolie is utterly fascinating and love her or hate her there is no denying the level of fame that she has attained in the past ten years.
