The icons that I have chosen are from different eras meaning that they can be living or dead and the ranking also consists of fictional characters. I am aware that cultural icons can also be inanimate objects but I have decided to limit the ranking to people/characters. I based my ranking on level of fame (how many people have heard of the person/character) media attention over the years ( Internet, books written about the person/character, movies/plays about or that feature the person/character, songs about the person/character, art work, parodies, etc.) and the overall impact/influence the person/character has had. My first choice to kick off the countdown: #500 Lady Gaga This controversial pop star has taken the world by storm in just the matter of a few years. With over 1 billion you tube views and 75 million albums sold worldwide Gaga has become a pop sensation for the 21st century. She exploded onto the music scene in the late 2000's with her debut album The Fame and since then has generated massive amounts of attention due to her outlandish outfits, her provocative music videos/performances, her ultra fascinating personal life and being constantly compared to Madonna Lady Gaga has become the pop princess of the 2010's. Even Simon Cowell said AI would not have lasted if their first winner wasn't as successful as she was, and that led to several popular talent reality shows, and many careers from those various shows, Idol included, who might not have had their chance if Kelly didn't win.

Even Simon Cowell said AI would not have lasted if their first winner wasn't as successful as she was, and that led to several popular talent reality shows, and many careers from those various shows, Idol included, who might not have had their chance if Kelly didn't win. That's very interesting. I never really thought of Kelly Clarkson as being the sole reason for Idol's massive success. I decided to put Simon Cowell on as representation of Idol because he was the judge of AI, Pop Idol,( the original British version), X-Factor, Britain's got Talent, and is pretty much the biggest name to come out of that particular genre of tv. I could change it and put Kelly in his place. I know that a person from Idol will be on the list but I've been debating on who would be the best representation for it. Lady Gaga is not really that original and she's been only been out for a few years which was why I placed her at the very bottom of the list. She is hugely popular right now but only time will tell if she will have the longevity of Madonna.

Yeah she's huge right now but it's hard to rank someone high who's only been out for a few years. I do acknowledge her popularity but due to lack of longevity she could only be so high up.
