The downside for the Rams is a suspension for Williams (if he's fined, one would think that would be up to him or the Saints to cough up the $).

If Goodell wants to send a message, the Saints should lose draft pick (s), and not 6th or 7th round picks. The Lions have lost a 6th round pick for a dubious tampering transgression; if these allegations against the Saints are confirmed, they're orders of magnitude more serious.

I agree w all. I hate cheating. If is true, fuck them and fuck them hard. What annoys me is Fisher hired him knowing this. What does that say about my new coach? This has nothing to do w the Rams, but now it does.

I was just starting to again feel hope for my suck ass team that I have loved through it all. This sucks.

I don't think the blame should all be put on the Saints. As soon as the Saints' owner found out about this crap, he ordered Payton to stop it. Payton blew it off and Williams gave a big "fuck you" to the league. Williams is the primary person who needs to be punished, and he doesn't even work for the Saints anymore. Stripping the Saints of draft picks will just make Williams laugh and everyone in the league will know that coaches are can do anything they want and never face any repercussions.

Players get suspended for things they do off the field that has nothing to do with the game. This crap occurred on the field and directly affects the credibility of the league. And it happened over THREE years. Williams admitted that he knew he was breaking the rules and just didn't care. If he's not tossed out of the league, it will be a loud and clear message that coaches are above the law and that different rules apply to players and coaches.

I can't disagree too much with that. It's Payton's job to know what's happening on the team. If the NFL tosses him out, I certainly won't complain.

See I would put Peyton on top of that list from the moment he found out about it. He had all the power to do something about it and he didn't. Let's call him Paterno for the sake of argument :D

There's plenty of blame to go around.

My concern is that people say, "OMG, we need to punish the Saints'! Take their draft picks! Suspend their coaches and player!" and Williams walks away with no punishment because he doesn't work for the Saints anymore.

The blame needs to go this way: Williams > Loomis (Saints GM) > Payton > Saints Def players Williams allegedly ran a bounty program during his time with the Redskins & it's embarrassing to hear his mea culpa statement saying how he knew it was a mistake to run the same thing at NO...how he learned "his lesson". Owner Benson was made aware of the investigation a couple of years ago & called in Loomis, telling him to make the bounties stop. Loomis (allegedly) lied, playing dumb, to Benson saying there wasn't anything going on. Payton played dumb as well...did nothing to stop it. As a long time Saints fan (even before Bum Phillips coaching), it pains me to read everything about it. This is the 2nd strike against Payton (the 1st - him stealing meds from Saints doctors). GM Loomis' integrity is called into question for lying to Benson. I can't believe I'm saying this but Loomis needs to be fired, Payton needs a year-long suspension & Williams should never step foot on a playing field again. I only hope we can resign Brees without having to put the franchise tag on him. Maybe this will kick Saints' ass into giving him what he deserves as QB.

I can't imagine Brees or any of their offensive players is too pleased right now. Most everyone in the league will be gunning for them for pure pleasure, no monetary reward needed.

See, that's it! There can be long term repercussions for the short-term stupidity/negligence. Taking away draft picks will hurt, although we don't go until 59th this time. I AM worried about the retaliation..

Goodell has decided to take away the Saints first round pick this year. Even though it belongs to the Patriots.

A reporter heard him quietly laughing and saying "Fuck you Belichick".

On hearing the news this morning BB traded the pick to the Raider for their 1'st, 2'nd, and 3'rd round picks.

Being a lifetime saints fan, this is gonna hurt. My only issue with this is that they got caught. No way the Saints win the superbowl if they don't beat the shit out of Warner and Favre. Facts are facts, and you retards don't like it, then suck your own.
