Does anyone put their Survivor Sucks activities a resume? No? Then they're all meaningless leisure activities. People think my particular activities here are stupid? Well that's why I'm doing them and they aren't. I think that posting over and over in fan threads is stupid but I don't go into Sucks threads and "profoundly" tell everyone that their discussion of Cirie is irrelevant on the great cosmic scale.

Then again, you might be some sort of Sucks productivity expert. Can you educate me on all the meaningful activities you've completed while accumulating 20,000 posts here? You know, the things you've done here that truly MATTER?

Then again, doing a current Edgic season might be one of those things on Sucks that truly matters. I hope the Sophie supporters each called their local newspapers to talk about their great achievements in reality show forecasting.

Episode 6

Pagong

Colleen – CP (CA)
C – Wonders how Gervase can be so useless and still get away with it due to his charm. However, she points out his charm may run out this day. Talks about Joel being overconfident about making the merge. Gives insight into the game and hints at where the votes will go.
A – Her squeamishness with the chicken killing is emphasized.

Game talk on Pagong? What!? Though interesting, this is most likely too little too late for Colleen. Likely remains eliminated by most, with the exception of a contingent of people talking about Colleen the forest goddess and how she will own the game.

Gervase – OTTN (UHNN)
U – Recognizes his laziness could possibly get him booted and is on board with the plan to pick off the Tagis. However, I don’t think these comments are MOR-worthy because they are very brief and primarily serve other stories (his OTT laziness and Joel’s strategy).
H – The “Gervase is a lazy turd that doesn’t pull his own weight but is charming” segment really gives you a sense of who he is. That plus his joke and attempts to charm the women.
NN – Sue calls him a pervert in her list of people to get rid of. Later, he basically admits to being Survivor’s first ever “lazy black man” by doing a personal rundown of how lazy he is (accompanied by footage of it all).
(He even sits out of the very physical immunity challenge – classic)

While there are hints of insight buried in here, they are borderline MOR at best. His primary role in the story is that of a big goofy character, mostly leaning N in terms of manipulation but still generally likable. Remains eliminated.

Greg – UTR (UAN)
U – No game talk.
A – “WHO COUNTED THAT CHICKEN BEFORE IT HATCHED!?” and also his point about not eating dog food because it will mess with his carefully chosen diet. Brief, but definitely enough to keep reminding us of his wackiness.
N – Sue calls him psychotic in her list of people to get rid of.

Greg vanishes during a crucial TC where he helps the girls boot strongman and alliance builder Joel. If this isn’t a clue to his loss, I don’t know what is! Interesting that their distraction pulls back during a TC. Remains eliminated.

Gretchen – MOR (MA)
M – Suggests that Gervase’s joke may come back to bite him. Gives us insight into her game strategy by stating that she will not join a voting alliance. Very similar to what Gervase says, but a bit more detailed when it comes to her decision not to ally with people. Important, but fairly shallow.
A – A little bit of personality in small snippets. In with the dog-food eating stuff, takes particular issue with Joel’s supposed chauvinism, is strongly against the idea of an alliance, and really hates the idea of tribal council.

If you look at her overall Edgic chart as I’ve rated it, it looks quite dangerous. Low key, slight P lean, with mild complexity as the merge approaches. One thing that might be a nice clue to her loss is that she hasn’t really “broken out.” However, one could also ask when that could happen, given that she is decidedly against playing the game. This would also raise alarms about how appropriate she would be for a Type B win – they usually aren’t particularly strategic!

I believe Gretchen would totally fuck with Edgic today. Applied very specifically, I doubt her edit fits the 4-winner model all that well. She’s also not on the complex tribe (though that has more to do with endgamers). However, she has decent ties to the story, to the themes of the season, and she is a positive female that hasn’t been ignored. She would never be universally eliminated prior to her boot – and this episode would have been the last chance for it.

Jenna – CP (CAN)
C – Wonders why she hasn’t voted for Gervase given he voted for her and he’s a lazy POS. Is on board with the plan to pick off the Tagis. Tells us she will vote for Joel but also expresses concern that it could be her since she got a vote the time before.
A – Seems more excited than anyone at Pagong to eat dog food (though she changes her tune quickly after eating it). Her persona as a motormouth, hyper, cannonball is pretty evident here.
N – Sue calls her annoying in her list of people to get rid of.

Another episode where she reminds me of All Stars Jenna. Like Gretchen, she is becoming more complex over time after a UTR start but her irrelevance at the start would keep people from biting as hard, and she would likely remain eliminated.

Tagi

Kelly – UL (UTR)
U – Accurately described what she thinks is going on at Pagong. She thinks they are nice people but they are playing Island 90210 at their mud volcano (accompanied by shots of Pagong doing just that). She doesn’t think they are taking the game seriously. Borderline MOR but mostly just SPV of the other tribe and seems to be used to characterize Pagong more than it is to flesh out Kelly.
L – No personal development.

In Tagi’s most low-key episode yet, Kelly is among the least important. I think antsy Edgicers would have her eliminated and she would be circling the drain in general. Her role as primarily a narrator is the biggest clue she doesn’t win the game. Then again, that’s what was said about a certain recent winner…

Rich – CP (CHN)
C – We get a couple of confessionals about strategy from Rich. First, he gives a great confessional about why to keep Rudy around – in the next phase he expects him to be voted out “before winning.” He ends the section with a confessional about he doesn’t think someone’s in control of his alliance – he thinks he’s in control of who’s being voted off “and that’s all that matters to me.” A great example of what I consider to be a low-visibility CP character.
H – This is the “Rich is naked a lot” episode. There is a large segment dedicated to how Rich is a big naked gay guy. He also boldly eats the dog food they sent to camp.
N – Sean thinks Rich’s nakedness is childish and immature. The music, however, doesn’t take a stand. Mostly it is stated by others as just a matter-of-fact piece of information. While most have historically looked upon this behavior unfavorably, I think the editorial slant is very mild.

Even when Rich isn’t going to tribal council, he’s STILL complex. A bit of a CPOTT again, with some likely arguing for an OTT based on the nakedness, but that complexity is good, meaty stuff. We know exactly what Rich is doing and why. Exactly.

Rich would become a very controversial Edgic character by now, I suspect. “Where’s his cooldown in complexity?” “He’s a distraction.” “He’s too out in front.” “Where’s his doubt?” And of course…

They Would Never #4
“They would never show the winner running around naked in front of people. If they did, they definitely wouldn’t show other people complaining about it or the winner saying he wishes he could be naked more.”

As classically awesome Rich’s edit is, the typical Type A concerns are still present in his edit. And of course, the way I’ve rated him has given him a lot less negativity than I expect his official chart would have. I am very strict about manipulation most of the time and others aren’t so I imagine we’d have some “He’s too N” in there as well. This may take the form of people arguing that alliances are the “evil” way to play the game and his role as the orchestrator means he can’t win because it would piss off the audience (Gretchen will win instead, you see). Not eliminated, but controversial.

Rudy – MOR (MA)
M – Rudy has “finally” gone along with the alliance idea. He claims that if he didn’t he’d be out at the upcoming vote or the one after. I wonder if this came up prior to Dirk’s ouster (due to his vote with them).
A – Military past is emphasized a bit with the visit from the green berets. Also doesn’t care for Rich’s lifestyle (and says Rich likely doesn’t care for his).

Well there goes the argument that Rudy is going to win for being above the whole alliance thing! Still, Rudy is a complex character that is well hidden by big fat naked distraction Rich on the complex tribe – that is, Rudy is great Edgic bait right now. His UTRness in some episodes (particularly Dirk’s boot episode) is a big sign that he’s not in the best position, though. Remains viable and controversial.

Sean – UTR (UL)
U – No game talk.
L – No personal development.

Sean doesn’t like Rich being naked. That’s about all we hear from him. Still eliminated.

Sue – UL (UTR)
U – Has a segment where she discusses the Pagongs and a list of people they need to eliminate ASAP for various reasons. This is an example of what I call tribal strategy narration. Sue is not speaking for Sue, she’s speaking for her alliance. While this is interesting and important information about Sue’s game, it’s not specifically about her so it also applies to Rich, Kelly, and even Rudy/Sean. I typically don’t consider this personal complexity in my scoring.
L – No personal development.

Sue has quietly fallen off the map. Half of her episodes are UTRs now (including the pivotal Dirk boot) and her role seems to be more of the hardworking alliance lackey. With Rich and Rudy still in the race (and Gretchen eating up more alternative support), I think Sue’s support starts to fade a bit.

Out

Joel – CPN (CHNN)
C – Talks about the need to stick together post-merge in order to survive. Lays out the list of Pagongs who are on board (all except Gretchen). Also describes to us Jenna’s “tell” when she’s voting for someone (and is right about it).
H – Apparently he’s the fisherman at Pagong. Also he’s full of himself, according to others, and a huge condescending misogynist.
NN – Pegged at overconfident and full of himself by multiple people, particularly Jenna and Colleen, and it’s reinforced by footage. He also predicts the rain will pass them, followed by a big downpour.

Guess all I remember about Joel came in this episode after all. Huh.

Modern Edgic Score – Correctly eliminated long ago (3.5 for 5).

Overall Thoughts

A huge complex episode out of nowhere. This is a great mix of classic and modern Survivor, where camp life and strategy, on both tribes no less, is successfully merged. Several ignored people, but hey that would happen anyway, right?

After watching, it looks like it’s really Gretchen’s fault that Pagong explodes. 5 of the 6 Pagongs are ready to band together against Tagi and they keep the one person willing to be a free agent at the merge. Oops!

Who’s Winning?

By the numbers?
Rich/Rudy/Gretchen
Sue/Kelly
Jenna/Gervase/Colleen/Greg/Sean (eliminated)

Story wise? Gretchen, Gretchen, Gretchen, I think. Someone who does a lot of story stuff and is watching please chime in if you disagree but I think there are dozens of ways this season could be spun in her favor and few ways it could be spun for Rich (as an example).

Winner quotes? No new ones.

Interesting that Gervase and Gretchen's edits contain similar statements, yet I really felt like Gervase had little complexity and Gretchen was borderline CP. I think this is another situation where length of statements seems to play a role, even if I don't necessarily want it to. I dunno. Will be interesting to see what others' take was.
