The Edgic Retrospective Thread
With Sophie winning S23, many have called for Edgic to revise itself. I believe this will ultimately be a slow and difficult process. Edgic has a hard time with changing things up. It is usually a very conservative group when it comes to altering the methods. This is both a blessing (there’s some stability) and a curse (nothing changes when it actually needs to).
I’ve been thinking about how best to approach the next season and how to best alter Edgic. In doing so, I came to the realization that my knowledge of editing in past seasons isn’t exactly all that great. Sure I’ve seen em all and I have a bunch of charts to look at. However, I have never watched a single season of Survivor with Edgic in mind after knowing the result. I have seen most seasons one time only and the ones I have seen multiple times I wasn’t thinking about Edgic during the rewatches. I suspect that this is similar for most Edgic players.
We often hear that if we don’t learn from the past we are doomed to repeat it. I am starting to feel this way about Edgic. How can we focus so much on “the past edits” if we don’t really know them all that well? In order to apply this strategy to playing Edgic, I need to do some homework.
With these things in mind, I want to rewatch Survivor (gradually) and reacquaint myself with the roots of Edgic. I want to see how Survivor editing started, how it’s changed, and what sorts of things we can learn from watching an old season with Edgic in mind.
We’ve had some seasons rerated as part of projects to translate old ratings but I feel like this is a different type of thread. To make sure what I plan to do here makes sense…
What I Plan to Do
- Watch every episode of Survivor over again and do Edgic on them. This is not a weekend project – I expect this to take years and be an ongoing discussion.
- Look at things like Mixed ratings in seasons before they existed, Good MOR vs. Bad MOR, and how current definitions of ratings would be applied to older (and often very qualitatively different) footage.
- Apply newer rating concepts (such as isolating complexity and character development) to older seasons.
- Enjoy a show we all love in a new way.
What I DON’T Plan to Do
- Replace old ratings. This is not a thread about revisionism. The goal here is not to take old winners and change all of their ratings to make them “fit better.” The ratings I come up with here are ratings I believe to be separate data with a different source and different implications.
- Find ways to demonstrate that rater error is the cause of problems with the current model. I am not interested in this issue because if rater error exists, it will also exist in future seasons. Trying to determine the “correct” ratings of seasons long past is a pointless goal. Any differences could have a number of reasons for them other than “old Edgic raters sucked.”
- Aggressively debate ratings like they matter. There’s nothing at stake here. Different opinions would be awesome because they would teach us more about perspectives on past edits. There is nothing to be gained by trying to force consensus. If you don’t like my opinions/charts, feel free to post your own!
Things I Think the Thread Could Really Use
- Someone with a good understanding of visibility calculations to give us more precise visibility data on past seasons. I have no experience with it so I don’t plan to do it. Having VF information for everyone for every season would be awesome.
- Someone who can look back on the construct of SPV and figure out what, if anything, it can teach us. SPV data is another thing I’d love to have for all past seasons.
- People who know story analysis/editing clues/winner quote business really well and actually use it in their Edgic. I intend to give thoughts on these issues as I go but I honestly am not good at them.
- Opinions other than mine.
