I'm already hitting the Mungiu up for a big prize since they love Romania almost as much as me- maybe Grand Prix or Actress? Also, Winter's Bone is definitely not like MMMM but not quite Clint Eastwood staightforward. It's got some deep mythological themes but it's easily able to be read without those elements. I personally did not pick up on them until after a rewatch.

But basically Ree's goal was to find her father and she succeeded. Nothing else really happened in between. Not gonna lie, I almost threw in the towel and turned it off in the first 20 minutes just because I had no idea what the hell was going, who anyone was and was just confused as fuck. But when I finally put the pieces together I loved it to hard, Malcolm was SUPERB as Alex and he was actually really cute in this :3. Imagine the disappoint that swept across my face when I saw what he looked like today, fantasy ruined. All in all a great film with some good messages and good acting, I give it an 8 because as someone who's never read the book or had much background information on it, it took me a while to like what I was seeing. Up next are movies that I never saw/forgotten completely - The Piano The Queen The Son One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Next Little Children 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days Breakfast on Pluto Memento If you've seen any of these let me know if I should watch them or just skip it! Also, I saw a documentary about suicide called Boy Interrupted. It's about a 15 year, Evan Scott Perry, who had bipolar disorder and ended up jumping down an air shaft one night. I don't think it had any type of special recognition but I know I cried like a baby and want to share it with y'all PS - I'm watching Notes On A Scandal at this very moment. Cate <3 A Clockwork Orange - lol, same exact reaction. First 20 minutes were "WTF, this is such pretentious shit" but I fell in love with the style and the bizarreness of it all. Malcolm eating the steak at the hospital with his OTT chewing style is hilarious. There's so many haunting images from that film. And I also Googled him right after the movie because I was lusting after him. Memento - IMO, Chris Nolan's only fine work. I hate him now because of his Batman fanboys and Inception is a piece of shit movie. But Memento is SO GOOD you have to watch it twice... in ONE sitting! Just engaging from start to finish. It's confusing but answers questions in a satisfying way. It gets you hooked from start to finish. The Queen - I watched this and didn't know what the fuck was going on. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days - One of my all-time favorite foreign movies. Do not spoil yourself on this one. There's a lot of unnecessary scenes but it all paid off because of the intensity of the climax. Really slow, so put this on when you have absolutely nothing better to do. Better as a night viewing.

Especially the women. Jedi, if I had to rank them: 1. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days 2. The Piano 3. The Queen 4. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest 5. Memento 6. Little Children 7. The Son (my least favorite Dardenne) 8. Breakfast on Pluto 4M3W&2D is probably my favorite movie ever. It should not be missed.

As a whole the film was good but there were times when it drifted into being a caricature of itself. Cate, who is probably my favorite actress ever, was not my favorite of the film. I feel like she was really on point for about the beginning 80% of the film but went off track a few times at the end because there were a few times her acting was a bit too OTT for my taste. Actually the scene when Barbara comes into the house and she's sitting there with the diary was the most stand out one for me in terms of it just being... bad, also did anyone else catch it when her tone from Elizabeth came out? :P Judi Dench killed it though, she played her role perfectly which is commendable because she could have EASILY became a one note character with it. I'm not saying she was some super complex & multifaceted character but she was fresh from beginning to end and seeing her drop her claws into another young blonde at the end was very well done. The film itself rather shocked me because I did not like it that much until the 2nd half, then it started to become a bit unbelievable, but I really enjoyed it. Some horrible acting though, the woman who played the mom was just atrocious, and the little boy was just so uninspiring.

("Britney Spears gives/gave? a strong performance") What about the EXPERIENCE? ("I don't/didn't? like the ending.") They always say keep what you write in one tense, so I get confused.

Well, your #s 7 and 8 and the only two I haven't seen from that list, so perhaps that's a good thing! If I were ranking the other six and A Clockwork Orange, it'd be: 1 - The Piano 2 - A Clockwork Orange 3 - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest 4 - Memento 5 - 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days 6 - Little Children 7 - The Queen Wow, that was hard. For a random grouping of films, those are all really good ones!

I felt like the movie dragged on for a bit but maybe that's because I have a short attention span and I took a 20 minute break from the movie a good 3 times. Or actually I don't think I was that interested in the plot, I was 3 when Diana died so I know nothing about her just like I know nothing about Elizabeth II. But I tried to not let that influence my opinions too much. As for Helen... wow, she really knocked this out the park. I think I've always liked the big/dramatic/showy performances more so I don't really appreciate the subtleness of quiet performances like this one but I picked it up. There were sometimes when I thought Helen was a bit too cold and just unsympathetic maybe but then there were other times where I felt like the pain was completely in her face/body language so I needed to just pay close attention to get it. I think what Helen did in this film was fucking brilliant and one of the most well crafted and nuanced performances ever. I think my favorite scene was when she finally went out to the public and was just looking at what the Brits gave for Diana then she walked over to get the flowers from those two little girls. It was something so little and insignificant but she just made it so sincere and I felt for her at that moment. I give the movie about a... 6/10 but I give Helen a 9.5/10.

Posts: 13849 04/27/12 11:25 PM Registered User More Recent Posts	Fresh from seeing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) remake! The immediate thing that stood out was the more expensive budget. This was miiiiiiiles better than the Swedish version in terms of the overall look and production design. The Millennium office actually looked like the proper office I imagined from the book and not the dark and dingy one they had in the Swedish version. The flashback scenes were filmed rather than being flash of photographs on screen. Some things felt identical, beginning with Daniel Craig himself. He was the carbon copy of the Swedish actor except with an English accent and better looking. Martin's house, the torture basement, the bridge--the prominent scenes were filmed on the same locations, but the other short indoor scenes like coffee houses had more personality here. I liked the unabashed product placement of Coke and Happy Meal as it tied in with Lisbeth's unhealthy eating habits. The editing win was also well-deserved. The film was heavy on exposition but it never felt boring because of the effortless intertwining of Mikael and Lisbeth's stories. I LOVED the score. The filmed opened with that obnoxiously bombastic score during the credits (which could pass for a literal visual orgasm). The score continued to require our attention all throughout save for the climax score which was ironically whimsical. Overall the score was very playful and unorthodox which was a perfect complement to Lisbeth's persona. Some people were complaining that the film overwelcomed its stay with the prolonged ending. I actually appreciated that it deviated from the usual formula and provided the much needed character buildup for Lisbeth. It was irrelevant to the main chunk of the storyline but the effort to establish the sequel was there. Rooney Mara was a little too boyish for my taste and was missing that innate dyke that Noomi Rapace had (how amusing that their names are spoonerisms of each other). Her costume design and makeup were too fashionable and didn't feel genuine. It was as if Lisbeth took a lot of time in front of the mirror so she could look that way, which she would never do. Lisbeth and Mikael were supposed to be partners in crime, but their tandem lacked that element of partnership simply because their characters were rarely in the same scene together. Lisbeth did her own research. Mikael did his. Their characters never quite had that marriage. Overall, this has been my 5th exposure to the same material, having read the book and seen the Swedish movie 3 times. The film was still able to trigger extreme emotions out of me. 9/10

I really love Tilda Swinton in this movie, and most people in this thread know that I'm far from a Swinton fan. She just really got the character and the tone of the film so much, and to know that Meryl and SaBu got nominated over her is so... ugh. Jedi, what I love about The Queen is its humanism and its approach to portraying Elizabeth. It's really hard to make the fucking queen of England seem like a real, relatable person but Frears & Mirren did such a great job at conveying the struggle she faced with having to balance public image and personal feelings, influenced by her upbringing. The film doesn't necessarily take a sympathetic view of her but it makes her... complex and realistic. None of that King's Speech hero nonsense. It's really such a crime that this lost original screenplay that year (I personally am torn between The Queen & Volver, but the latter wasn't nominated). Interestingly, The Queen was actually the critic's darling that year- not just Mirren, but the film itself as well as its screenplay. It won several critics awards and was runner up at two of the most important (NY & LA). The only film with as much love that year was United 93, really.

Ruth Gordon was fun, but I'm a little surprised she won an Oscar off of that role. I don't think I would have ever looked at her performance as potential Oscar bait. I loved Mia Farrow and it was cool when I realized that the doctor who looked familiar to me was a very young Charles Grodin. I need more horror recommendations. Some of my favorite horror films: The Sixth Sense, Misery, The Orphanage, and now Rosemary's Baby. (I tend to like psychological horror or ghost stories more than slasher films.) Haven't seen The Shining or The Exorcist yet, but they're in the queue.
