for people who're watching it - would having absolutely zero clue about English history be an issue? I'm thinking of wikipediaing some stuff before heading into it.

(romese? romeican? romeish?) whatever, jerriffan watched "rome". and knows... oh, and watch out for survivorartic too. canadian (i know... i know...) but genius too. * |

I wish I had Showtime for this. I just watched Elizabeth I on HBO today. It was pretty interesting. I had more questions and then spent another hour surfing the net reading up since I wanted more information on her and Mary, Queen of Scots and it kind of glossed over it at the very beginning.

Quote: Finally. An acknowledgement of my intellectual superiorty. My being Canadian makes it all the more sweeter. I just became aware of this show and am looking forward to watching it. I was raised an Anglican (the good ole CofE) and was innately curious about Henry VIII from an early age. Showtime is the new HBO. Let's just hope and pray they do not do to the Tudors what HBO did to Rome. |

well then, let's dance around this the best we can...
survivorartic IS someone to listen to. ummm... like "rita" in the final year of "arrested development". *nod nod, wink wink* sa knows her way around history. that is a given. but like "rita", she is canadian and therefore we must take her claims of "intellectual superiority" like we did rita's claim of an "olympic" medal. you feel me? humor her and she is a fount of knowledge. just don't encourage her. or jeeezzz... |

sofaking IS someone to listen to. ummm... like "Gob" in "arrested development". *nod nod, wink wink* sk knows his way around a chesterfield. that is a given. but like "Gob", he is a barcalounger and therefore we must take his claims of "superior comfort" like we did Gob's claim of being a "magician". you feel me? humour him and he is an escape artist extraordinaire. just don't encourage him. or jeeezzz... |

I was obsessed with the Tudors (but mostly Henry VIII) when I was younger. I wish I had Showtime to be able to watch this.

Re: The Tudors | ||

HIstory is a lie agreed upon...so even though books, etc may say something happened one way doesn't mean it really did.
I try to watch shows like Rome and The Tudors without worrying whether they are historically accurate or not, otherwise it would drive me crazy when it wasn't like what I read about in books. Watched ep 1 and 2 last night...really really good show. JRM is hawt as hell. |

Re: The Tudors | ||

I was all over glued to PBS when "Elizabeth R" and "Six Wives of Henry VIII" aired (back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, ya know) and read pretty much anything I could find on that period. I'm not really looking for boatloads of historical fact in "The Tudors", but if the show is at least reasonably well-written, not laden with blatant inaccuracies that a four-year-old could suss out, and the actors don't suck, then fine by me. (And most anything with JRM in it is VERY fine by me!)

Quote: That's crazy. While there's as much uncertainty in history as in science or other disciplines, the things historians agree upon can hardly be called lies. That said, there's nothing wrong with an inaccuracy if it's in the service of art. I only mind inaccuracies when they are driving silly melodrama, like the Cate Blanchett Elizabeth I. |
