#45. DISTRICT 92009POSTER/TRAILER ANALYSIS: Goddamn this movie had great marketing in the posters. The trailer was good too.NOMINATION ANALYSIS: Picture, A. Screenplay, Editing, Visual Effects. I bet it might've won that last one if it wasn't for Avatar.District 9 is a very clever movie and a very clever commentary on apartheid...for 2/3rds of it. It's also an incredibly black comedy, featuring prawn cannibalism, cat food, and Sharlto Copley (who needs more work) transforming into a prawn in the creepiest way possible-very gradually. It shows the pointlessness of apartheid and one man's change in stance on the matter. It's got a great screenplay and very nice visual effects. So why is District 9 only #45 and my #7 movie of 2009? Because of that goddamned final third. The final third of District 9 is 150-200% action. Which is fine up to a point, because at first it helped the movie...but after a while, it became TOO MUCH. Like, enough already! We don't need to witness Vikus whooping EVERYONE'S ass! Come on, more transformation scenes! Can't we see Vikus gradually turn even more prawnlike?Still, the movie is great up until that point. And the ending is ultimately very good, with no one knowing if the aliens will come back to declare war or reconcile, and Prawn-Vikus making another metal flower. So, to sum it all up, if District 9 were a movie review, this part would stay the same and then the review would end with:OMG I LURVED DISTRIKT NIN HOW DARE ARMOND WHEAT GIVE IT A ROTTEN RATENG HES SUCH A TROLL HE RUINS EVERY MOVIES TOMATOEMETERRR SKORE ITS UMPOSSIBLE FOR A MOVIE TO GET A 100 NOWADAYS AND THE DARK NIGHT IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER AND ITS THE GRAYTEST INJUSTISS EVURRR.(Yes, Dark Knight should've won, but it's not worth sobbing over.)Hint for #44:

#37. There Will Be Blood(2007)It was really tough for me to even get to this point, because there are so many great movies on this list, so the fact that the top 37 are all still in is a huge compliment to those movies. I feel like most people would have this in their top ten, but there were just too many movies I liked more, rather than me not liking this one. I thought Daniel Day-Lewis's performance can be added to the other three I mentioned, Charlize Theron's, Sean Penn's, and Helen Mirren's, as one of the top ten performances of the 21st century. The directing set sort of a creepy tone to the movie, which worked very well, and the script was beautiful, but despite that, the movie still needed a great leading performance to work. If a mediocre actor played Daniel Plainview, the movie would drag, and the greatest scenes would be average. It seems like an extremely difficult role to play anyway, and still, Daniel Day-Lewis was incredible. From the scene where he screams that he abandoned his child, to the scene where he's yelling at his son at the end, to the famous milkshake scene, Daniel gave the character villainous characteristics and relatable human traits all at once. His performance was going to make or break the movie, and it took the screenplay, and allowed it to reach it absolute fullest potential. I'd say the last 45 minutes of the movie are unbelievable. I would actually rank his performance as the second best of the 21st century, behind a female's performance which is still in this ranking. I also liked the performance of Paul Dano as well. The movie as a whole was more than worthy of a Best Picture nomination, and the lead performance demanded a Best Actor Oscar.Major awards it won or was nominated for:Best Picture (lost)Best Director (lost)Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor (won)Best Adapted Screenplay (lost)Major awards / nominations I would've given it:Best Picture (nomination)Best Director (nomination)Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor (award)Paul Dano for Best Supporting Actor (nomination)Best Adapted Screenplay (nomination)

Gatorzzz, if you die, it will be because you let a shark give you a blowjob. Seriously, ew. Bruce is a frigging shark, he's not hot. Moving on...#44. CAPOTE2005Trailer can't be embedded, click here.POSTER/TRAILER ANALYSIS: Both are good.NOMINATION ANALYSIS: Picture, Director, Actor (Hoffman), S. Actress (Keener), A. ScreenplayMuch like Milk, Capote is a biopic about a gay. Much like Harvey Milk, Capote was a major figure of the times. Unlike Harvey Milk, Capote was the most limp-wristed, lisping, prancing little fairy you could imagine. Seriously, he would make Colton look straight.Capote's novel In Cold Blood is a creepy read and I highly recommend it. When you learn about his obsession with Perry, the novel becomes even more disturbing because Capote clearly was fond of him. Capote pretty much left Perry to his death, which was supposedly a form of redemption. The movie is very well done all around, with Hoffman giving one of the most shockingly accurate portrayals of the decade. I've listened to some recordings of Capote and Hoffman has it down pat. I think the movie has two problems:1. Keener shouldn't have been nominated for her portrayal of Harper Lee. It's a very bland performance, and she's not much more than a slightly witty f*g hag. But hey, at least the real Harper Lee can join other famous and amazing f*g hags, both real and fictional, like Grace from Will and Grace, Ana Matronic, Adele*, and the woman whose name I forget from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy!2. The adaptation of In Cold Blood, which told the story of the killings, was better. Fucking creepy, that movie was.So while I recommend Capote...the book was better, and so was the original movie.*Yes I'm aware that Chasing Pavements is not actually about loving gay men, but it's an amusing theory.Hint for #43:

#43. AVATAR2009POSTER/TRAILER ANALYSIS: Both are pretty and fine.NOMINATION ANALYSIS: Picture, Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, Visual Effects, Editing, Score, Sound Editing, Sound. No Screenplay nomination...no shocker. So, I suppose I need to explain my thoughts on Avatar very clearly since ILK isn't a fan. Yes, the script was a bit cliche, and the fact that the #6 movie of 2009 was challenging The Hurt Locker for the win is bizarre. But it's still great.First off, the three Oscars it won were well earned. I mean, if it didn't win Visual Effects we'd all laugh. Every other technical nomination is well earned. Etc.But now for the criticism...the script. Yeah, it was a bit cliche, and I am NOT a fan of Cameron actually using unobtanium. But, quite frankly, the movie is a work of art visually. It's lush and detailed. And there's nothing wrong with a simple story. So what if it's hokey? It's a transporting adventure, and the dragon training sequence is art.And as for the claims that it's similar to Dances with Wolves...so fucking what? Most of that movie's detractors came out when it beat Goodfellas. (I do think that was a terrible choice though...but I still like Dances with Wolves. It's a very thoughtful film.)Also, I'd like to add that sequels to Avatar are fine as long as they're "Aliens" and not "Alien 3." And make sure the dead characters stay dead please, bringing back Sigourney Weaver is silly.(I hope this review was adequate.)Hint for #42:
