It's true that the focus was mostly on the stevedores in season 2, but I think you need to watch that season before you move on to season 3.

I'll probably pick up season 2 as soon as I finish watching season 1.
This is one of the rare occasions where I bought a DVD without ever watching an episode of the show. Especially since HBO DVD's aren't exactly cheap. But I figure all of the rave reviews can't be wrong. And Homicide: Life on the Street is one of my favorite shows ever. |

OMFG, I didn't know it was returning!
This is my favorite cop show EVER, it is the only one that in my opinion is truthful about policing, gets to the heart of the politics of policing, and understands cops. Every cop I still know watches it based on word of mouth. It is the best show on TV - period. After that W A T C H Brotherhood on Showtime. Next best. |

Cool. I just found out The Movie Network will be showing season 4 up here starting on September 10th.
Now I just have to get caught up in time to watch the new season. |

Yeah, PBF, Season 2 is essential. It really touches on some important issues about our post-industrial/modernization society. Also, every else from the Barksdale gang through Omar, etc are included in the season. They just aren't the main characters but there is some important character development involved in Season 2 for the characters of season 1.
I feel like Bubs waitin for the show! September 4th, will be my day to do nothing but watch The Wire. I can not wait! |

You have to watch Season 2, just to catch Omar's court scene where he puts that lawyer in his place -- possibly one of the best scenes I've seen on an HBO show. Also, Ziggy and the drunk duck.

Season 2 is the best season of TV ever. It's so great. I'm excited that it's coming back. Yay!
I agree Stewie. My family is mostly cops and the truth is all people usually do what's easiest, especially at work. |

Plus, you have to see Omar and Brother Mouzone's first meeting, so that you can fully appreciate the last few episodes of season 3. Two of the coldest MFs in all of TVdom.

Quote: I wasn't sure if this was Season 1 or 2, but you are absolutely right. The scenes in the courtroom maybe the best part of Season 2, bar none! Classic TV and so important to understanding Omar. All Hail, Fezzy! |

Episode 6 from the 2nd season is probably the best hour of television I have ever seen. There isn't a second wasted in that ep from Omar in court to the scene with Sergei and Nick talking to Prop Joe in his store and then the scene with the trucks full of chemicals and Nick and the Israeli and Ziggy. Then there is that fantastic speech D has about the Great Gatsby and how the episode ends was perfect.
And I didn't even mention the scene in the strip club or Callie Thorne naked!! |

I know, HB, I watched it again after discussing it on the board. I kept rewinding the part when the attorney describes what Omar does and Omar's response/actions! That was too dayum funny. I might watch it when I get home! Gotta love an unapologetic criminal.

The Stringer Bell/Avon Barksdale story arc through the three seasons is the closest Ive ever seen a TV show match a Shakespearean level of complication and drama.
And to think its actually the secondary storyline to the main narrative involving Daniels and McNulty. It is laughable to think that this show has never been nominated for any serious Emmys. No surprise I guess, considering the Emmy folk thought Two And A Half Men merited major nominations. |

Quote: Yes! Their last scene together was one of the most powerful ever. I must re-emphasize to the person that asked before. YOU NEED TO WATCH SEASON 2 BEFORE MOVING ON TO SEASON 3. Looking back, it's remarkable how much the Bell/Barksdale story was developed in season 2, even though most of the focus was on Sobotka and the stevedores. |

I'm sold. I'll definitely pick up season 2 as soon as I'm done with season 1. I haven't had a chance to watch any of the episodes yet. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to sit down and watch most of season 1. I'm trying to get caught up so that I'll be able to watch season 4 in a timely fashion.
I did watch The Corner a while back, and I thought it was one of the best mini-series I've ever seen. |

The Sobotka storyline (with Frank, Nick, Ziggy) also parallels the larger Barksdale story (Avon, Brianna, D'Angelo) and even foreshadows it a bit. I read an interview with the creator who said one of the main themes was the disfunction of institutions, and its affect on the actual family's.
The 'bad guys' only had functional family units because they could incorporate those relationships into their work, which eventually lead to the destruction of family. The 'good guys' have equal family disfunctions (Daniels' marriage, Keema's dissatisfaction with her girlfriend's child, McNulty's many failures); however, what's stressed is the near-familial bonds that the officers have with each other, and its those relationships that matter most. |

Re: The Wire- Season 4 coming in September
Quote: I remember in the first ads for the show I saw, the show was called "McNulty". I think after the first season, McNulty was not even that much of a main character - sometimes his scenes were really superfluous to the main action and definitely many of the main story lines. I'm thinking of the brothel scene in season 2 especially - that just was all kinds of wrong for the show, McNulty had always been real good police up until that point. It was like they had to invent ways to keep giving him scenes. The lack of awards does surprise me, but I think that part of it is the time of year the show comes on - it's basically a year and a half delay from the season's beginning to eligibility when it showed earlier in the summer. I can't help but think that part of it is the huge cast, most of whom are black and it's set in Baltimore, not something glamourous and relatable by LA folks. Chris Bauer as Sobatka, Larry Gilliard as D'Angelo and Idris Elba as Stringer are three of the most robbed actors ever. The writers, though. Damn, they're like the most robbed people in the history of television. |

Re: The Wire- Season 4 coming in September
Quote: The producers have even speculated that this is why the ratings are so low. The show is getting snubbed all around. I think one of the producers mentioned that the Emmy's did a newsletter or something for minority TV and The Wire wasn't even mentioned. I think this show is just to raw and honest for most people and especially Hollywood. Also, like Homicide, the storylines are actually multi-episodic and does not end nice and neat at the end of each show. It take a certainly level of intelligence and patience and more than a three second sound-byte to digest this show. It certainly takes more than one viewing of each season because it isn't formulaic at all. Thank goodness for HBO. BTW, The Corner is now on ON Demand. |
