I think this is one of the best shows on TV- next season is supposed to look at inner city education. Anyone else watch?

I just started watching this without having heard anything about it first, and I think it's a great show. I tried watching both The Shield and Thief on FX, but didn't get into either of them. And this show seems more realistic than the characatures that they ended up with on the Sopranos. It probably benefits from the lack of a single main character, too - or if there's supposed to be one, I can't tell who it is. The whole Amsterdam thing seems far-fetched, but I can suspend disbelief for that one plotline. |

I can't wait. I watched all of Season 1 (again) this weekend. Just getting myself in the mood for the new season.
I wonder who the main characters will be. I still miss Stringer Bell. Sooo sad that he got offed. He was the highlight of the show for me. So sexay! I loved watching season 1 and seeing Omar. Why does this show make all the bad guys so lovable?! Omar don't scare, people! I can't even imagine how they will go undercover in the Baltimore schools. All the main characters are like old as dirt. Herc and Carver can not pass for kids but they would be funny as hell watching in a high school setting. So, I am getting excited and I can't wait. For a listing of the episodes, check here:www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/episodes#season-4 |

This is a fantastic show. Unfortunately even though it's been less than a year since I went through it, I don't remember any of it because I've been immersed in other heavy serials like Lost and Sopranos. I'll have to go through it all again. All I remember is that the cops pretty much decimated the gang in season 3 and some of the bigwigs are dead (I won't spoil it all in case some haven't seen that season).

great show, this.
i'll watch this one every time it shows up. and it is unencumbered with the high production costs of a "deadwood" and its ilk. hbo seems so "production cost" oriented of late. they would kill my precious deadwood yet carry "sex in the city" for so long. long live "the wire"... |

In a just world, Herc and Carv will be lunchroom workers.
I always have a problem with the names on the show, particularly of the cops. McNulty's (bushyhead) not coming back right? |

McNutty is coming back this year... Presbulisky (sp?) - the cop who punched his father-in-law on the 2nd season- becomes a teacher in inner city baltimore schools.
I live in the Baltimore area and have seen them taping first, second and now 4th season... I suck, because I have no real spoilers to show for it. Quote: You don't live in Baltimore... there are streets in the city that you just don't drive down- and if you have to, or got lost, you definately don't stop at any redlights. (no worry about getting pulled over, the cops don't go down those streets, either). |

I don't know how true this is, but if this is true, this is great.

I just watched the two preview shows. This season will be great. Just based on the previews, I think this may be the best season ever. I am so excited and cannot wait for the first shows to hit On Demand. Even the preview shows are excellent and they discuss this season and seasons past.

This is my favorite show ever. Can't wait for this new season. Especially the scene when Omar robs Marlows cardgame. If you thought Christopher from the Sopranos was pissed when his cardgame was robbed, you have no idea how much of a badass Marlow is.

I watched the special episodes last night- I live in the Baltimore area and had no idea that they used actual criminals in the show as actors or that the characters were based on people (sometimes they even name the characters the same name as the people that they are based on).
I can't wait for this season- it looks so good. Ironically, this season was written over a year ago. In Maryland, we are in the midst of a Governor's race and Baltimore city schools are a hot issue (since one of the candidates for Governor is currently the Mayor of the city.) The school board voted to LOWER the passing grade requirements in the schools recently- they did it quietly and quickly without a chance for the council or the public to weigh in... Once again, the Wire brings an amazing ablilty to find and portray very relevant material... |

That's the thing. I don't think Marlo is that much of a badass, but the Barksdale crew had gotten so weak by that point - a house divided will never stand.
Omar will eat Marlo for lunch. By his damn self. |

I'm in the middle of watching Season 3 right now. I cant even go back to watching a watered-down show like Law And Order after watching this. Its challenging, all the performances are great, and I feel like I'm actually watching something that is an approximation of how things really are in the local drug trade.
I feel that Omar Little can join Tony Soprano and Al Swearingen in the pantheon of HBO tough-guy icons. |

I thought season 3 did a great job of illustrating Stringer's problems of being a gangster. Stringer reached a point where he saw he had a future that he could be rich and powerful without having to worry about getting shot or arrested. For Avon and Marlo the endgoal was just street cred even if it means dying or doing 20 years.

Quote: Watching this play out will be interesting. I really cringe when I say I can't wait but honestly, I can't wait to see it. The most interesting thing to me to is when you see the actors out of character. Their portrayals are so realistic but then you when they are interviewed out of character it is night and day. |

Season 3 did a great job of bringing a subtle part of the Barksdale-Bell dynamic to the forefront. Stringer always came across as the 'adopted son' - the one who does most, if not all of the work, but since he's not a Barksdale, he won't ever be fully in control and call all the shots. He always resented D'Angelo (and probably Briana), so Stringer's best day was when Avon got arrested. He was always interested in business, which is why he was comfortable working with Prop Joe and wanted Brother Mouzone (coldest dude this side of Omar) out of the picture, during season 2.
SPOILER (highlight to view) One of the most poignant scenes from season 3 was when Avon and Stringer were looking back on their long friendship, knowing it was at an end, and each of them had already made arrangements to sell out the other. |

I have a question for people who are familiar with this show:
How essential is season 2 to the overall story? I've heard some people say this season is great, but others have said it isn't as good as seasons 1 and 3. I picked up season 1 on DVD but haven't started watching it yet. I know season 2 supposedly takes place on the docks and isn't really connected to the other two seasons. Is it possible to go from season 1 to season 3 without watching season 2, or is season 2 essential to the overall story arc? |
