I really wish they'd do something with the Doctor's daughter again. Especially before David Tennant leaves.

Little-known actress Karen Gillan has been unveiled as the next assistant in Doctor Who.

The 21-year-old will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.

Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.

"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. - I just can't wait to get started," she said.

'Incredible actor'

"The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him," she added.

Head of Drama, BBC Wales, Piers Wenger said she brings "energy and excitement" to the role.

"When she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special," he said.

Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said they saw some "amazing actresses" but Gillan "walked through the door the game was up".

He described her as "funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it".

"A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too," he added.

Gillan, from Inverness, developed a love for acting after attending several youth theatre groups and taking part in various school productions.

At the age of 16, she decided to pursue her career further and left school to study acting at Edinburgh's Telford College.

She went on to secure a place at the Italia Conti drama school in London and landed her first role in the Scottish drama Rebus.

Parts in Channel 4's Stacked, The Kevin Bishop Show and James Nesbitt's forthcoming film Outcast followed, but the role in Doctor Who is her first high profile to date.

Attention Dr Who fans! For those who weren't able to download this episode, BBCA is showing "The Next Doctor" this Saturday night. This is the 2008 Christmas special, the first of David Tennant's final year as the Doctor. Never seen here in America and not available for sale. I'm jazzed. I believe it's showing 9pm Eastern time, and repeated throughout the night, but check your cable schedule for times.

Thanks for the heads up, DG. I programed it into my DVR. I'm sick of waiting for the last season of Tennant's Doctor to air. I am going to miss him and I hope the new guy does a decent job of filling the Doctor's shoes. I like the looks of the new companion so far.

The 2nd special, The Dead Planet, is finally available for purchase on a DVD that will play on US machines. It's scheduled for release on 7/28. I've got my preorder in through BBCA shops. The problem is that the specials are so far between and then it apparently takes months to get BBCA to air it. I'm relying on my DVDs of the previous seasons to tide me over. I'm looking forward to Saturday. Just wish it was in HD. I'm spoiled that way.

I'm pretty sure Planet of the Dead is being released on Blu-Ray. I signed up on Amazon to receive an announcement when Doctor Who was going to be released on BD and they sent me one for PotD. I want the whole freaking seasons though. Torchwood's mini-series is going to come out on DVD/BD at the same time, I believe. I managed to get the first season of that on BD for under 50 bucks, which was amazing. It was cheaper than the standard DVD!

A late-night commercial on BBCA yesterday indicated that "Planet of the Dead" will be shown on Sunday, July 26. They are making a big deal of the fact that Dr Who is being shown in HD for the first time. Apparently BBCA switches to HD on July 20, just in time for the Torchwood mini-series

Christopher Eccleston is in the new GI JOE movie

I enjoyed his one year stint as the Dr. and is the main reason I am going to go see this movie

Of course Chan Tatum is another ! :)

It's a shame Tennant so completely overshadows Eccleston. I adore Tennant and Eccleston did only do 1 year, but that one year has some of the best episodes. I have the DVDs of all the seasons and really enjoy revisiting the Eccleston episodes.

I found this trailer on Youtube and did a little research for some answers and posting this link for a good explanation about this series.

Love K9 from Dr. Who and SJA but don't know if I'd like him as much in this case---will have to wait and see--

I started watching when Sarah Jane Smith was the Doctor's companion. I have watched every episode of every series available thus far. SJA is okay. Most species on it are from original series, and continuity is okay. It just eliminated the homo plots to make it family viewing - friendly.

There are a couple 200+ gigabyte torrents of every known episode that still exists of the original series.
