Agreed, PoChop. I don't think it's lazy storytelling at all, it's just changing the landscape, that's a standard method of creating new points of interest or additional conflict for the protagonist(s). Writing 101 would instruct us that when a scene or a dialogue begins to get stale, then move locations or introduce a new character. And when writing for a shallow tv audience, make sure the new folks have a sufficiently high T & A and nakedness quotient.

For every complaint about new characters invading the screen time of the original cast, I could come back with a retort that it's silly to have 20+ people around who never say a word or do anything more than develop an occasional rash. If it's a society they are building, then why are the majority of the crash survivors mute, and opinionless, and at the beck and call of the 10-15 that we have heard from so far?

I say bring on the fresh meat.
