I personally just came in to find out: why all the vitriol toward such a not that hateworthy character?

I don't adore her, but I certainly don't hate her nor think her a whore.

Maybe because she's strung both Jack and Sawyer along. Is a cold blooded murderess, a bank robber, and who knows what else?

Kate's role has kind of taken a back seat, so she doesn't get as much screen/plot time. If she did (like in season 1 and some of season 2) perhaps the Kate hate would be more palpable.

I dislike Kate for two things... the stupid love triangle and murdering her not-stepfather/real father/whatever, then trying to put the responsibility for it on her mom, like Kate was doing her a favor or something. It always seemed clear to me, Kate did it for herself, then had the gal to be angry when her mom wasn't pleased over financially benefiting from murder.

That said, island Kate is ok when she isn't being wishy-washy over Jack/Sawyer and the background storyline is pretty much concluded, with only run, Kate, run remaining.

yeah, I guess the whole Mary Sue thing rankles. I don't know how many times I've written stories and had to tone down
the lead female for that very reason.

Well, Lord knows when someone says something about a CHARACTER on a TV SHOW, they must be talking about the actor too, right? It's not like anyone can differentiate between real life and stuff on tv or anything.
