Im sure this has been answered somewhere before, so I apologize for the "new Button" abuse...

The magnetic forces might be focused upwards towards the sky? Of course you're assuming the plane was broken apart by a magnetic fields. It may also have been a security system like Ol' Smokey. Or a tractor beam.

If Benry is telling the truth the Others are on a completely different island altogether. i.e. they are miles away and there are various mountains in between them and the hatch.

Magnetic fields fall in intensity with the square of the distance. Also planes are predominantly aluminum and would not get attracted to a magnet. On the other hand, any metal body travelling through a magnetic field will generate loop currents that create magnetic fields opposite in direction to the applied field. This could induce forces on the plane which might rip it apart.

A strong magnetic might screw up the avionics, as would an electromagnetic pulse, but screwed up avionics or flight controls would not tear a plane apart as shown on the episode. The plane literally fell apart into three major pieces without doing any rolls or loop de loops. At least the footage didn't show any plane acrobatics but I suppose they could have happened at a greater distance from the island. I do recall some turbulence when they showed the crash from the inside perspective of the plane.
Of course until they explain the cloaking device barrier or whatever so-called physics are happening on the island it's difficult to conjecture about what caused the plane to fall apart. I think we have to assume for now that the plane accidentally got through the barrier when Desmond didn't push the button in time, and that once he did press the button the plane got trapped inside the finite volume created by the cloaking device, or shield, or whatever it is. Much as a boat would be forced to travel in circles around the island so would the plane. But at the high rate of speed the plane travels perhaps it could not travel in a tight circle due high centripetal forces that might have been induced in the plane's superstructure. Or the plane rubbed up against the barrier. Maybe it's more like a space warping field that alters space (and probably space-time) than a cloaking device . And for some reason there is an exit/entry point at 325 degrees that remains open. I suspect any communication signals would need to go through this hole or slot. And how sunlight would manage to get through the shield is just as confounding. I wouldn't expect a space-time warping to let sunlight through without changing the shape of the sun to an ellipse or something. Ah, questions, questions, questions.... For the world is hollow, and I have touched the sky! |
