Forgive if this is previously covered ground (I tried a search to see, but no results).. but here's a theory a friend came up with when we talked about this week's episode:
Desmond died in the hatch explosion, and Hurley (who's definitly got some supernatural powers) is the only one seeing and talking to Desmond, a la "The Sixth Sense".
If you notice, once Locke and Charlie get Echo back to the beach, no one really acknowledges Desmond, who's a few steps away throwing rocks into the ocean. Is Hurley the only one who sees him?
