I found a site that had screencaps of the brainwashing movie that Karl was forced to watch.

Why the goggles? and the music? I know nothing of brainwashing. |

If you've ever seen "A Clockwork Orange" they have a scene of a guy being brainwashed by flashing images & his eyes were forced open with a goggle device. The brainwashing has to do with sleep deprivation, sound saturation & visual images.
I read in another thread here that there was a saying being played backwards that had to do with time-space. |

In A Clockwork Orange they wanted the character, who loved Beethoven, to start associating certain things whenever he heard the music. His eyelids were propped open by some pretty wicked looking prongs - like when you have eye surgery.

Karl being all brainwashed is going to go hang with the Losties and brainwash them.
That idiot Chah-lee will probably be the first one. |

Here you go. It was the whole negative reinforcement thing to convert him from a anti-social criminal to a good law-abiding citizen. Same as on LOST, although it's questionable as to what's a good citizen in Otherville. Actually the conditioning on LOST may have been a bit different. In Clockwork I think they associated pain from shocks and chemicals with images that previously gave the dude pleasure. On LOST it was more like constant reinforcement of "positive" message in constant repetition. I didn't see any wires connected to the gonads. Either way it's conditioning or re-education to correct "bad" thinking.
Think right or don't think at all!

Quote:If by "they", you mean the author, then yes. But if you mean the brainwashers, no. The experimental drug they gave Alex was intended to make him permenantly repulsed by what he saw on the screen. That he became similarly repulsed by the Beethoven soundtrack was an unintended consequence. |

yes the purpose in clockwork orange was behavior modification - to force a repulsion to violence. he later, or course, got the hell beat out of him, and could only retch in response.

I mentioned the book, The Men That Stare At Goats, in another thread but I think it bears repeating here. The book details what a former US Army colonel developed and called the First Earth Battalion. He envisioned an armed force that used nonlethal techniques to subdue enemy combatants, including music and light. Several of the ideas within his manual have been used as the basis of several torture techniques used by the intelligence community in Gitmo and Abu G. They are also using subliminal messages and ultra-low frequencies buried within the music to brainwash and control the thoughts of those who are listening. Several of those techniques were being used in tandem on Carl. The purpose of the methods is to breakdown the individual to either get them to tell you what you want to know or to destroy their entire personality, thereby annihilating the persons intellectual/emotional integrity. It is scary stuff no matter what the purpose. |
