Shambo was correct when she said "Galu loyalty" was a myth. Strictly speaking, nobody was loyal to Galu, they were loyal to a few other people within Galu. It's easy to call somebody a traitor when it's clearly in your best interests to keep what's left of the tribe together (after blindsiding a member of that tribe, but that's, like, totally different), but not the so-called traitor's. Once Erik was gone and Shambo flipped, John was nothing but a pawn to the other Galus, and realized he'd have to play both factions against each other in order to still have a shot. Had John succeeded in getting rid of Monica, and then Russell still idoled Kelly, how much do you want to bet Laura would have been looking for other options and making deals with the Foa Foas just like John did? Invoking tribal loyalty is just a way to manipulate people who are being used by the tribe for their vote. If it's in someone's best interests to stick with the people they started out with, they usually will. If it isn't, they shouldn't have to apologize for making whatever they think is their best move. No rational person is there to play for a tribe.
