Well the issue in Paris was all the tournaments were rebuy tournaments, so there wasn't a real cost for those players to pushing early with the hopes of doubling up. Whereas in a cash game/ online sng (I haven't really played a lot of online tournaments, just for time reasons) it's fine to have people chase as they're reducing their competitive edge. The problem for me was being a 25 year old kid w/o a huge bankroll just killed by ridiculous hands over and over. 

As far as having a competitive edge against chasers, that depends how many chasers are sitting at your table.  If they are all playing suited connectors (or any cards), and its a 9 player table, the probability that you win with good starting cards plummets.  I played freerolls online when I was learning Texas Holdem, and since there was no cost penalty for going out, you'd have people play any ol junk and go all in right at the start.  If lose, wait for the next free roll in one hour  This dumb behavior is not seen when playing with their own money. 

BTW, I found the hypergeometric function (a probability density function) very useful for making optimal decisions.  I made a table of Prob(not hitting an out) with axes #draws and #outs.  This exact same table could be used for Prob(X other players don't have i outs hit after the flop) with axes #players and #outs.  This made it clearer how I should adjust my play according to how many players were in after the flop.  For example, Prob(5 other players don't have a heart given 3 hearts on the flop and given you don't have a heart) can be read from the table.  It is less than 9% (ie, 91% chance someone else does have a heart.  And you could use the same table to answer preflop questions by adding 1 to 2% to the table probabilities.

Not sure if any poker books have mentioned this.  I learned Texas Holdem poker on my own without reference to poker books.  I ended up winning  3000+ person free rolls online in Texas Holdem, Omaha, etc.  Have never played live - I suspect I have too many tells.  Sort of like Edna lying tells.  I have never played with cash online (other than what I won in freerolls) because I was wary of the ease of multiplayer collusion cheating, which I always thought would be easy to do, even at poker sites with hacker-proof honest software with properly implemented random generators, etc.  Also, there is software which can assist people in tracking player statistics and play behavior (which effectively boosts memory to superhuman status).  This is not considered cheating, even though it gives people superhuman memory status.  The same software also computes the odds of you winning at any stage in the hand, given no knowledge of the other players cards and implicit assumptions.  I never used such software.  There are some bitcoin poker sites now (sealswithclubs.eu) that I might try someday.  I checked recently and there were only 40 people playing on the site.  They publish the exact software they are using (they purchased it from elsewhere), but I'm not sure how to verify the quality of this code since the software maker is a private company with closed source code.
