My knowledge of the music industry is (admittingly) very limited, but from what I read above, the rough translation is this:
David Cook, the SONG WRITER, is able to write with other acts, and will get serious compensation for it. And for his own music, he has virtually full rights to his music he's written (possible discussion now on the David Cook fansites centers around if he will be now able to re-release some of his old Axium songs, or even Analog Heart [his indy debut album] or songs from Optimistic to a Fault [the album he was recording when he auditioned for AI; includes his tour-performed song "We're Only Honest While We're Sleeping"]; all these songs AI took out of circulation once he got on Idol by either Idol, 19 or RCA, who now own the rights to that music).

NEW YORK (Cherry Lane Music Publishing) - Cherry Lane Music Publishing Co. Inc., whose roster includes the Black Eyed Peas, John Legend and Wolfmother, has signed a worldwide, long term publishing agreement with 2008 American Idol Winner and songwriter David Cook. Cherry Lane will be administering Cook's current catalog and holding co-publishing rights in any new writing opportunities that are set up through Cherry Lane.

Cook took the nation by storm when he appeared on American Idol and received a record breaking 56% of nearly 100 million votes cast.

He rewrote chart history when 11 of his songs debuted on Billboard's Hot 100 chart - the highest number of new entries in a single week by an artist since the Beatles in 1964. His debut self-titled album, released in November 2008, includes the smash hits 'Light On' and 'Time of My Life' and was certified platinum by the RIAA. His next singles are 'Bar-Ba-Sol' and "Come Back To Me.' Cook is currently headlining his national tour, 'The Declaration Tour.'

In announcing the deal, Richard Stumpf, Senior Vice President of Creative Services and Marketing at Cherry Lane noted: "Everyone knows David Cook the American Idol winner. After early discussions with David and Iain, however, I was most impressed with David Cook the gifted songwriter. This is exemplified on his album. We are thrilled to have David as part of the Cherry Lane family and look forward to further expanding David's song writing career."

David Cook added, 'The opportunity to be associated with a company whose roster includes so many artists that I admire, as well as a company who's mantra seems predicated on the idea of 'music first', made the decision to sign with Cherry Lane an easy one.'

The deal was negotiated by Stumpf and Keith Hauprich, VP of Business & Legal Affairs for Cherry Lane, Iain Pirie at 19 Entertainment and Howard Siegel at Pryor Cashman LLP.

fffingybyach -- Yes, CBTM is not on this CD, nor is Light On, nor Time of My Life. This is a promotional CD for David's song publishing company. Since he didn't write/co-write any of those songs, it would not be ON this CD.

UPDATE: I know I'm going to get grilled for this, but this weekend, I let the fine folks at Cherry Lane Music know about this EBay auction above (which is one of their promotional CD meant to market David's music catalog and NOT as David the music artist). Got an email this morning from one of the people mentioned on this CD...stating they'll have this auction pulled very soon
