I just watched the premier on the History Channel and it was excellent. It really reminded me of the treks taken in Survivor Australia and Survivor Africa except with people who are actually intelligent. Basically it is four explorers (Navigator, Wildlife Expert, Survivalist, Journalist), who all think they know what is best for the group, as they follow the path that Stanley took to find Dr. Livingstone. They only have themselves, the food they bought, their own travel gear, and a couple of porters and warriors to help them out. Basically though it is up to the four of them to follow the path with only a compass and maps. Anyway I really liked it. Already fireworks with Pasquale trying to call the shots, Kevin stupidly getting lost in the first 3 miles, Mireya being treated like a second class citizen because she is a girl, and Benedict who wants to be in charge. Plus who doesn't love the vague Benedict and Mireya showmance? I'm sure it will be on all week on the History channel but if you need a show to watch this summer... http://www.history.com/expedition/episode-1/

Using only a compass and basic maps, they will re-experience the spirit of a remarkable adventure in world history--American journalist Henry Morton Stanley's perilous 19th-century journey to find Dr. David Livingstone. They will confront obstacles and dangers similar to those encountered by the great explorers before them, traveling through Africa's varied terrains, facing danger from severe dehydration, diseases and wild animals. Conflicting egos, disorganization and personality conflicts threaten to sink the expedition before it begins: The team struggles on the first leg of their journey, traveling only 10 miles. Though very capable, the team squabbles over who is in command, and mistakes prove costly. I so wanted to watch this and didn't know which night it started. I'll watch it tonight & set my DVR to record all new episodes. It sounded really good before I knew MB was involved and now I am certain it will be good.

I didn't think there was much "substance" to the first episode. It seemed like I fast forwarded through at least 30 minutes of "Next on Expedition:Africa" and other fluff and promos. It felt a little bit like watching Biggest Loser with lots of repetition, etc. I love the story of Dr. Livingstone and Stanely. I was disappointed to hear they were getting rides between sections, but I understand that they don't have time to walk all 950 miles. So far I'm interested. I'd love to see that girl get a backbone, tell all the boys to stop comparing penis size and get serious about the expedition. I loved when she held her hand up and that cobra backed down. She's fantastic. I liked the blonde guy at first, but once he started butting heads with with the guy with the compass I wasn't interested in what he had to say anymore.

They spend the end of each segment showing a commercial of the next segment and it is annoying as hell. That is why I prefer to tape and watch, so I can fast forward through these commercials. Why not include more minutes of actual show instead of telling us what to expect? Thank god Survivor hasn't stooped to this cheap format.

Mark Burnett produced events like EcoChallenge where 50 teams of 4 people travel 300 miles across extreme terrains and mountains. For some reason he stopped sponsoring adventure races and got caught up in Survivor, so I'm glad he's getting back to his roots. Out of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment is pretty good too; it's seven episodes in.

I want to throat-punch that British guy who "ate his own dog!" on one of his earlier (failed) expeditions. He's just obnoxious. He's like a little kid in the backseat of a station wagon, yammering away all the damn time. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I don't know how the hell these guys are going to carry all that sh!t thru the journey. I wonder if all of the explorers will actually make it to the end. This looks like a better version of Survivor, even though the idiot Mark Burnout is producing.

Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Taped (yeah, taped - the cable connection is in the basement with a 32-inch standard def TV and a VCR) the premiere last night and caught the first 32 minutes before calling it a night. Will transfer the ep to DVR for future archving and watch the last 28 minutes tonight. Although I knew nothing would really happen to him, I got the heebie-jeebies when Kevin got separated from the expedition. Kinda felt that queasy feeling he might have been feeling. I anticipate that I'll be seeing this series from Kevin's perspective. Absolutely love the Henry Stanley storyline and the insertion of historical references throughout. On my first trip to Africa years ago, after traveling packed in a small van all day, I found my contact in a village marketplace, among a sea of people. My first words to him were, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Suddenly, I felt a little embarrassed, uncertain whether my words might have an unintended connotation. But he fondly referred to me as "Dr. Stanley" for the next two years. :)

And of course, there were no conveniently marked trails back in the 1870s. No wonder Stanley went a different way. The Maasai eating habits are similar to the Samburu from Survivor:Africa. Blood, organs, you name it. Got major positive vibes from Kevin taking up for the porters. Got major negative vibes from Kevin using the porters as an excuse to voice his own fears.
