The Others and Richard might be as clueless as the viewer and the Losties. I get the feeling that Richard is getting some benefit from the island (like long life). Maybe the Others are also getting something from the island although they seem to be more like brainwashed cultists. When Ben and Richard were discussing Locke potentially messing everything up I think it might be related to Richard and the Others risking losing these benefits.

It seems to me that the island can't actually communicate with humans in normal terms but only on a subconscious level. It's like something is buried or trapped under the island that's the cause of all this. A buried LOST alien spaceship? Imprisoned angels, demons, or aliens? Some energy based alien being or life force left over from the big bang? Or is it just a deposit of strange exotic dark matter? Whatever it is it appears to have some intelligence or will to survive so it must be more than just a deposit of stuff left over from the formation of the solar system. It starts to get all Stephen King like when you consider what the root cause is of the island strangeness.

But getting back to the subconscious communication it might appear that only certain people have a gift for communicating with the island. The Others may have been looking for someone like this when they took Walt or other children. Indeed perhaps it is children who are best able to communicate with the island because they are innocent and more open to things. And the whole method of selecting a leader of the Others might reflect who is best at communicating with the island even though it's only at a subconscious level. It might be that Locke is the person who has best communicated with the island so far, yet it doesn't mean he's exceptionally good at it yet.

If Locke now believes the island is telling him that Jacob needs to be killed it might end up being quite a paradigm change for Richard and the Others if they think Jacob is a good guy. I don't know who or what Jacob actually is and Locke may just be talking about "killing" Jacob in a figurative sense. He might just mean revealing the truth about Jacob such that he's not worshipped by the Others. If Jacob is a real entity he might just be a poser that's also using the island for his own benefit while suppressing the island or whatever it is that provides all the magical powers.

ANd I don't know how the smoke monster fits into all this other than to say it's more a part of the island than it is of the Others.

Yes sir/madam. I'll try to keep my thought processes limited to your level of curiosity and beliefs. Besides, I wasn't talking about why the island moves but why the island might want what it wants and what it needs, and how it communicates with people on the island. If all we're going to get is that the island wants what it wants, and that the island can magically influence things happening to people on other parts of the planet without some minimal explanation by the end of the series we might as well stop watching right now.
