West Virginia
Apparently West Virginia is wild AND wonderful. Boy I wish that I would have known that the last time that I visited that state. I might have been able to enjoy the whole overall wonderfulness of the state with the knowledge of the license plate logo in my head. At least they attempted something with having the stripes on the license plate and I commend them for being a little bit different. West Virginia does have much better 'Welcome to West Virginia Y'all!' interstate signs than license plates to be honest. Por ejemplo:
OMG what kind of business would possibly be going on in West Virginia? #38 Missouri
This might be considered the first upset of the rankings. Some people might rank this a little higher, but I just can't. I liked Missouri's old license plate so much better than this one. I feel like I have to rank this one low just to be respectful to the older license plate. That wavy line below the state name was just the COOLEST!! You don't even KNOW!! The state outline on the license plate is pretty cool though and unless the bird on the license plate is the state bird then it is pretty laffos that it is on there randomly. #37 Connecticut
New Jersey could learn something from Connecticut's license plate. Using the same color as the gradient for the lettering was just a good idea I think. There are times when using all the same color just turns out to be a disaster (Just ask Michigan), but then there are other times when using all the same color really works out nicely. I also like how the state outline is in the corner of the license plate instead of in the middle of the letters or part of the background. Gotta love those gradients!! |

I'm surprised CT made it this high. I guess you're right. It's boring, but it's also aesthetically pleasing.

So I've decided with the recent return of all the posts that were thought lost in the Clubspocalypse that my license plate ranking thread would also
return.
Next post by me will contain a special double serving of 6 more license plates. Just have to write the rankings up. |

Ohio
Ohio is the birthplace of aviation according to Ohio's license plate. Which is all fine and dandy but if they are going to put that slogan on the license plate then why not incorporate it into the design as well? I mean a faint sunrise in the background doesn't really have all that much to do with aviation. The license plate is a pretty good one otherwise. I like the font that they used for Ohio although I wish that the word was just a little bit bigger. It's sort of overshadowed by the registration number in the middle of the plate. #35 North Carolina
Continuing with the aviation theme from the last plate that was ranked we have North Carolina. They may not have been the birthplace of aviation, but by golly they were the first to get a plane into flight. North Carolina did actually incorporate a plane into their design of the license plate along with the reeds at the bottom smartly indicating that the first flight indeed happened near a beach. They used that same faint background image style and that just doesn't appeal to me at much as ones higher on the list. #34 Kentucky
I must say that Kentucky's license plate is rather plain, but what draws me to it is the logo for the state name. Otherwise this license plate would rank much lower. I mean all it has besides the logo is the state in the middle of the plate and a white to blue gradient. I like the font that they use for the state name and they smartly used their history as a state that is mainly known for the Kentucky Derby and raising horses and incorporated that into the state name. Almost like the horse is an extension of the name. #33 Washington
I don't really have anything bad to say about Washington's license plate, but then again I don't think that it is all that good either. I guess it just falls into that category of being in the middle and all around meh. If the mountain had been in a bolder color in the background I might have liked it more, but it just seems like a very muted license plate. I would like to visit Washington someday though and maybe I will change my mind for the better if I see the plate in person. #32 Kansas
If I had continued with the ranking when I first started back in February then Kansas may have been ranked lower in this update, but it gets a rise of a few places because of a very arbitrary reason. It sort of looks like the title shots that they used to promote Parks and Recreation (The new show with Amy Poehler) and I love that new show so I have to rank Kansas' license plate at #32 for that reason. Congrats Kansas for just having the right design at the right time. #31 Hawaii
This might be quite a controversial ranking for some, but I will justify my reasons for ranking it this low. The rainbow is very cool and all and one of the reasons why I ranked it this high, but take the rainbow away and what do you have? You basically have a solid white background with black lettering. The epitome of boring. The rainbow does add a nice touch of cheeriness into the license plate though. I would say it makes for a very recognizable license plate from all of the other states. |

The best license plate ever was NY's Statue of Liberty license plate in the 1990s. But the current one is OK too.

Florida
Finally a break from the blue/red colored license plates that dominated the last update in the countdown. I like the green color that they use for the state outline and the license registration number. The state outline in the background is a little bigger than all the previous state outlines that have graced other license plates and I like that. I think that it makes the plate stand out. Plus there is an orange on the plate and who doesn't like Florida Orange Juice? #29 Washington DC
Is it just me or is there a "NO" missing from in front of the slogan at the bottom of the license plate? I mean it's like they are saying they want to be taxed unwillingly. #28 Georgia
Maybe this license plate is ranked so high because I see it all the time living in the state to the left of Georgia. I think it just has that familiarity factor because if I lived in a state that isn't close to Georgia it would have ranked 10 to 12 places lower. I do think that it is a very modern and stark looking license plate. The logo of the state outline inside of the peach is very appealing even though that is basically the only thing going on. #27 New Mexico
Yikes! Now I like color in license plates and that is why I have saved the white background plates for all the lower places, but this license plate just hurts my eyes if I look at it too long. Is it possible for something to be too yellow? It does have a very New Mexico feel to it though. The symbol in between the numbers and the letters and the stitching like pattern at the top of the license plate are proof of that. Maybe if the background color wasn't so bold I would rank it even higher. #26 Minnesota
I guess you could say that Minnesota is like the first place license plate for the bottom half of the countdown. Every license plate from here on out is a nicely designed license plate. Minnesota plays up its name as the state with 10,000 lakes and it portrays one of those lakes across the top of the plate. Somehow it doesn't feel like there are just two colors in use here though. It feels like a whole lake scene has been accurately portrayed in just a small space. |

I mean it's like they are saying they want to be taxed unwillingly. The entire point is that the "NO" is missing, because they HAVE taxation without representation. So using that as a motto is brilliantly ironic. The three stars over the "equals sign" is George Washington's family crest and DC's flag. Not to be a douche, but did you not take US history?

Interesting Kentucky License Plate Trivia: ^ This used to be our license plate. Although it won the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association award in 2003, Kentuckians hated this plate so much that many purchased stickers to cover up Mr. Smiley's face on the plate. Lol. Even with the smiley gone, the phrase "It's that Friendly" was quite a suggestive phrase. It was quickly replaced by the "Unbridled Spirit" license plate ranked above. |
