Is it normal to tell everyone that it has died, then later on talking about it as if it was alive, then again telling everyone that it's dead, and then again talk about it as if it was alive. All within, say, a two years timeframe.

I have to do that with my In-laws. Only it's not with my pet but with me. Sometimes they forget and think I am dead. Surprise surpise!
