I am very surprised that there has not been a thread started for this show. It looks to be an international competition for dancing. The big downside of this show is the association of Michael Flatley.
And this is the project that Nigel has taken on after leaving American Idol

NBC to premiere new 'Superstars of Dance' reality series on January 4

NBC has announced Superstars of Dance, a new dance-themed reality competition series from American Idol creator Simon Fuller and former Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, will premiere on Sunday, January 4 at 9PM ET/PT.
Following its Sunday night debut, Superstars of Dance will air two-hour episodes in its regular Mondays at 8PM ET/PT time period beginning January 5. Its finale is currently scheduled to air January 26 at 8PM ET/PT.

Superstars of Dance -- which NBC had ordered under the title Superstar Dancers of the World earlier this month -- will pit skilled dancers of various genres from different countries against each other.

The eight countries currently scheduled to participate are Ireland, India, USA, Argentina, China, Russia, South Africa and Australia. Each team will be comprised of two soloists, one duo and one larger group.

Lord of the Dance star and recent Dancing with the Stars guest judge Michael Flatley will host the series, which is being produced by 19 Entertainment with Fuller and Lythgoe serving as executive producers.

Lythgoe -- who also co-created Fox's So You Think You Can Dance with Fuller -- confirmed in August that he would be stepping down as Idol's executive producer after previously serving in that role for all of the Fox mega-hit's first seven seasons.

Instead, Lythgoe said he planned on devoting his time to both So You Think You Can Dance and also "a new venture with Simon Fuller" -- which has come to fruition in Superstars of Dance.

Superstars of Dance's premiere was announced as part of an overall January 2009 programming announcement in which NBC also announced premiere dates for two other reality series: The Biggest Loser: Couples and Howie Do It, a new Howie Mandel-hosted series....

WHAT??!!!! No Canadians?!.. then this show will be referred to as SOD!

edited to add: I have seen one brief commercial for this show. I am thinking this will receive a similar fate as international Idol. I wonder if we will see any SYTYCD alumni. Actually that would be very cool if they did. Jack, Rhys and Kate from Australia. Maybe Josh, Katee, and others from US.

So this show is only going to be a month long? But I guess that's a good thing because Michael Flatley is hard to stomach for very long (two hour episodes each time is going to be challenging). Sure, I'll watch. I like the idea of countries competing against each other.

I saw a very brief ad a few days ago and it looked like a big production being set out. I wonder how the voting will go.
Will it be like Rockstar-INXS? I hope so, that set up a worldwide vote.
If that is the case, India and China will win hands down given they have a billion people in each country.

Here is another quote about the show, from reality blurred, apparently the show might be called SUPERSTAR DANCERS OF THE WORLD:

NBC has ordered a new competition series from American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance producers Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller. Superstar Dancers of the World will air early next year and "pit the masters of various dance genres from eight countries against each other," according to the network, which doesn't hesitate to layer on the hyperbole and say that the show "is poised to become one the greatest spectacles of dance performance ever seen on television."

Eight teams-from Argentina, Australia, China, India, Ireland, Russia, South Africa, and the U.S.-that each have "two soloists, one duo and one larger group" will compete in different dance styles. Lythgoe said in the press release, "This is the most challenging and exhilarating project I've ever done. Nothing of this magnitude has ever been attempted before on television. We will bring to America different cultural styles of dancers - each performer the best in their genre - and the sheer mosaic of styles and energy is going to be nothing short of awe-inspiring."

I saw the ads for it but wasn't sure what it was all going to be about. I love to watch people dance!
I have no coordination so when I see people dance I live through them. Michael Flatley is hot! My old man
hates my addiction to reality shows but he likes the dancing shows as well. I think this show will be fun!

The dancing I saw was actually more acrobatics; but it was pretty cool. I am set to go back tonight for another taping. The cast looks quite eclectic and quite interesting, overall. I worry there will be a lot of ehtnic stereotypes based on costumes and stage set-up, but suppose that is to be expected.

American television audiences can be trusted to vote on things - especially when it comes to TV talent shows. Who is the best singer on "American Idol"? Which ballroom couple did the best Cha-cha-cha on "Dancing with the Stars? Which group has the street cred to be called "America's Best Dance Crew"?

But the question of "trust" got a little more complicated when it came to deciding how to choose a winner among professional dancers from eight different countries competing on upcoming "Superstars of Dance" on U.S. network NBC.

"American Idol" producers Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller, both Brits and both behind "Superstars of Dance," have decided to leave the voting entirely to the judges and exclude TV viewers.

"It isn't a show that you would really want the public to participate in, because it would be unfair," Lythgoe told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday. "I would have thought the American public may vote for America," he joked.

"Superstars of Dance" premieres on Sunday, Jan. 4, on NBC. Irish dancer Michael Flatley, star of the stage shows "Riverdance" and "Lord of the Dance," will host it. Dancers will come from Ireland, India, the United States, Argentina, China, Russia, South Africa and Australia.

Despite what Lythgoe thinks, we wondered if in fact American audiences could put aside any possible cultural bias and not only to tune into a show but also pick up the phone and let their fingers do the voting - fairly? It seems these shows work best when audiences have a vested, rooting interest in their favorites.

Lythgoe, for one, said he believes audiences will tune-in. After all, he said many network executives were doubtful about "American Idol" before its start in 2002, and now it's a top-rated U.S. show. But was he right on the voting? Is it a good idea to only let the judges decide winners?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. For example, on some previews, I saw some Shaolin-ish stuffs.
