The St. Petersburg Times in Florida reports that Gus, a Chinese crested dog, had cancer. He was 9. Gus was rescued from a bad home and went on to win the annual World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in northern California. Gus came from humble origins. According to the fair, his adopted family in Gulfport, Fla., rescued him after learning he was being kept in a crate inside someone's garage. He had one leg amputated because of a skin tumor and lost an eye in a cat fight. Gus' owner had said the prize money from the contest would be put toward the dog's radiation treatment.

I have no idea if it was a repeat or if the competition was even recent, but Gus captured my heart. I was really saddened to find out at the end of this past competition that Munchkin had died, too. They had a "In remembrance of..." thing for Munchkin and another dog.

The 1.8-lb. mutt, possibly a mix of teacup Chihuahua and Chinese crested, won the title at the famed contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair last year. "Say a prayer today 4 my YODA...rest in peace 3-10-12," her owner, Terry Schumacher, wrote in an e-mail obtained by California's Hanford Sentinel. "She passed away last night in her sleep. I will miss her funny little ways! But comforted knowing she will be joining my Mom and Dad, who loved her so much! Her memories will live on forever!!!"
