Anyway, I wasn't making personal attacks, I was commenting on the books vs. the tv show, or is that not allowed if it involves McWolcott needing to actually consider another's opinion? Here I was thinking everyone was allowed to comment. Someone just needs to let me in on these rules so I don't make these mistakes anymore. Thnx! <3 |

I'm surprised McWolcott isn't open to others' opinions. Is there some history between you two that I don't know about cuz this doesn't make
any sense?! McWolcott...what gives?

I'm on McWolcott's side on this one. Anna as Sookie is very true to Sookie in the book. And even though the show does stray quite a bit from the books,
this is still a series based on the books. And what makes the books good are the characters, all of them imperfect, most of all Sookie, but they are so unique
and the way they interact gives heart and soul to the books. If the series isn't going to try to capture that in some way, why not just make Buffy the
sequal series or something.
Anna is playing Sookie so true to the book's character--she can be selfish and foolish and petulant and irrational, etc etc but those of us who have read the books have a better understanding of why she is that way because the books put forth her perspective more. For example, for those who think Sookie is dumb, there is stuff in the books about how she didn't do well in school because it was hard to keep other's thoughts out of her head while still focusing on schoolwork. There's quite a bit about that in the book that makes things more understandable. If you haven't read the books, it's just like watching any new show, you watch as the characters develop. If you've read the books, the characters are already developed for you and because just about every character is pretty true to the book, we feel we understand them better than non book readers do. |

I don't have a problem with mikester. My only issue was him having not read the books and saying they have nothing to do with the show. He said the books
might as well not exist wjen it comes to understanding their characters which is silly IMO because Sookie is played pretty much identically to the character in
the books.
That's all. And No, I don't need other people defending me, I was sleeping. |

I understand the above, but those of us who have not read the books are entitled to our own opinions of the characters regardless of, and in spite of, what is
written in the books. Our opinions shouldn't be discounted, especially given the fact that the show has been proven to not be a direct play-by-play of the
books. I would even venture to say that the book readers are somewhat biased (not sure if that's the right word) and that (depending on what Ball has up
his sleeve) the readers may find future plot developments to be in direct contrast to what a character may have done in the books. You may even (who knows
really?) find that your reading of the books will be a hindrance to enjoying the development of the show. Given that the show =/= the book I think it's
rude to tell someone they are wrong.

McWolcott wrote: Well I didn't see him say that and I don't want to go back and check, but if he did then I see your point. But we can still base our opinions of Sookie by what Sookie has done ON THE SHOW and not be wrong. ETA: OK, I did go look and he did say that but I think you kinda twisted his meaning. His point, I believe, was that the characters should be able to stand on their own (in the show) regardless of what is written in the books. I agree.

I'm surprised at how much the books are like the series. I expected it was going to be more like gossip girl where they followed the book in the first
episode and then went off on their own at least plot wise.

McWolcott wrote:I wish you would have just said that so we could actually, ya know, talk about it, instead of giving me ~attitude~ which escalated this. Not every disagreement has to be a huge fight. <3 And I still think that's true. I mean, those of you have read the books are completely fine to compare it and say whatever you want, but there are a lot of people who have not read the books and the writers are going to take that into account. They have to make a show for viewers who don't have the books to rely on for background information for the characters. And so unless the show gives us certain information on Sookie, I think it's fair for someone to believe something that may not have been true in the books. As for how Sookie is played compared to the show, I don't know. I never had anything to say about that, but I would think that if the show and books are different so far, not everything about Sookie on the show would hold true for the Sookie in the books. That's all. |
