(the last time i started this thread, before it fell off page 21, it was about handbags that cost like $20,000.) since that thread is gone i will star a new one. w00t! lately primetime has been doing shows about "outsiders". folks that do shit you and i would probably never conceive of. (ok. folks that do shit that is probably half as fucked up as what we all do, its just these people allow cameras to follow their everyday lives.) anyway, tonight it was about a dude that built a cabin WAY UP in alaska upon retirement, and decided to live his life in the company and friendship of a bunch of black and grizzly bears. if you didn't see it, here is a link to an abcnews story: Living With Bears, Playing by His Own Rules anyone else watch this tonight? in one way i admire this dude. he set off on a retirement adventure and has built a life trying to connect with a bunch of wild animal he used to hunt and kill. he has made amazing progress on a personal journey to achieve what few have ever accomplished. a connection with the wild. and he succeeded. mano-a-mano with the bears. he doesn't care about his personal safety. i don't either. i feel that same way he does. sort of the "some days the bus picks you up, some days the bus runs you down" way he lives his life. que sera, sera... but i am a bit torn by this ep. and his personal connection with the wild. the responsibility of his personal connection with the bears against that which must surely be the truth. that just about every other human on the planet that the bears will meet would want to kill them. because he taught the bears humans could be cool (when most humans are not.) did his personal journey actually put the ones he cared about so much in danger? should he even have embarked on this course in the first place? you know, he cares about the bears, he will earn their trust and take care of them. most humans? BAMM! shot to the head. so actually, the bears probably get totally fucked by this one human that just wanted to get to know them and understand them. the one that slowly gained their trust, worked with them, gained their love. and in the end probably will get them all killed. wow... i guess which leads to the question... should i adjust my personal actions based on what the most depraved of human kind is willing to take advantage of? just so my personal ideas and beliefs will not encroach upon the ones i love and care for? so they will not get fucked for my efforts? hummm... He obviously gets great joy from interacting with the bears, but you know darn well, some guy , to whom money is no object, will charter a plane & goto Bear Haven country, bag a bear & get it stuffed & tell lies about how hard it was to track & kill, so ultimately that man will be responsible for robbing them of their natural fear of humans.

And then I thought, YOU IDIOT. IT'S A GOTDAMN GRIZZLY BEAR! GET THE FUCK OUT, QUICK SHARP! I thought he was as ridiculous as the couple from last week's epi with the "monkey daughter." I'd never let my kids (if I had any) get that close to an exotic pet with those wackjobs as parents.

I so envy Charlie's opportunity to just literally "frolic" with the bears. Charlie lying on the ground with that one big black bear and just stroking him/her while looking into its eyes is something I do with my dogs. Sounds corny but they sit still for the longest time that way and honestly I'm the first one that has to look away. I too struggled with the exposure of these beautiful bears to a little taste of man's kindness knowing that not every man wants to show this side of themselves to the bears at Bear Haven. Hopefully Bear Haven will remain as pristine and secluded as it seemed to me. Grizzly Man was a great show too in a much different way. Terribly sad what happened. Things that nightmares and scary campfire stories are made of. But it was sort of predictable. Let's face it, just like Steve Irwin, the croc hunter - who meant no harm to any animal - Charlie will probably get done in by one of his "friends". Maybe not even intentional (like Zigfried/Roy in Vegas whose lion attacked him to supposedly save him). Ya just can't mix beasts with humans. Nobody's fault, just the way we're wired.

Grizzly Man was better but this was really a good different take on the living with bears thing, they did some interesting compare and contrast. I wonder what Werner Herzog would think of this. But I got bored and turned it off at 9:45 I had enough of hearing about one dude living with bears. But it was pretty good. Now that Monkey Mom crap.. give me a break. Monkey's are so vile... gross.. some monkey's are cool but 99% of them all are mean sons of bitches. Wanting one of those things as a pet = major red flag for batshit insanity!

Whoa. That guy clearly has some issues, just on the little bit I saw. I loved the shot of the cameraman diligently filming the interview as he was being sniffed by a bear. A FUCKING BEAR! And this as the announcer says "Clearly we had to go back on some promises made in New York, such as not being alone with the bears." However, I did see the full ep of the installment from two weeks ago, about the Amish teens who run away from their families. Riveting, heartwrenching stuff. I particularly liked the silhouetted interview with the elders, who 'fessed up to owing a '67 Barracuda on the side back in the day. And the kid with the tricked-out horse buggy? I want one of those. I missed the monkey ep, but this sounds like it's a very cool series overall. I'm adding it to series record. ETA: you all do realize that this is a special run of Primetime, which is normally a true crime show -- this is Primetime Outsiders. They're examining people who live on the fringe of society. After the Outsiders mini-series, it went back to true crime of the week. Tonight? Bob Woodruff reporting from around the globe on the Chinese. Yes, the same Bob Woodruff who just after having been appointed co-anchor of the ABC Evening News almost died due to an IED in Iraq. He's back. He speaks fluent Mandarin. He threw down an awesome report. Why oh why does Primetime have this Jekyll/Hyde/Whatevia thing going on these days?

The whole nine yards. I am SO impressed he's up and running again! Loved him chatting with the Cambodian chirrens. Still, I wonder why he didn't address the fact the Chinese are expanding influence in places that no one else gives a damn about. Angola? Cambodia? Seems like they're kind of picking off the low hanging fruit. This is hardly a NATO vs. Soviet Union struggle.
