When I went to UCSB.. the big thing was throwing the shoes laced together over power lines. I never did it, or had it done to me. I didn't understand then
and I don't understand now.

it's shrouded in mystery. i've heard that people do this when someone dies. hellIFiKNow.

I've seen shoes on power lines, shoes in trees, shoes on roofs, shoes hanging over a porch. This doesn't surprise me.

i've seen that, too, mm but not out in the middle of nowhere. it was rather surprising because this is WAY OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE. definitely worth
stopping by and checking it out. it was one of many cool things i saw on my trip. do you know what it means?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe_flinging
A Shoe tree, not to be confused with the shoe-preservation device of the same name, is a tree (or, occasionally, a powerline pole or other wooden object) that has been festooned with old shoes. Shoe trees are generally located alongside a major local thoroughfare, and may have a theme (such as high-heeled shoes). There are currently at least seventy-six such shoe trees in the United States, and an undetermined number elsewhere. |

When I was in LA I saw shoes strung over traffic lights and power cables. Someone at my hostel told me that it was realted to gangs and everytime someone was
killed they would take their shoes and hang them up to let others know.

Poor tree, that can not smell good. I just don't get it, it seems stupid, guess I am too old and hate litter and love trees.

Do they have to walk home barefoot?

I saw two of these trees last summer along hwy 26 in Oregon, between John Day and Mitchell, near the John Day Fossil Beds. I don't think that's a
hotbed of gang activity. that's the only place i've ever seen them.

we were told that if you see a pair of shoes strung over the power lines that you can score a bag of dope in the house under them.
No lie. |
