In my opinion, the best season of Edgic was Palau. It was the season where Edgic really hit its stride. We still had stalwarts like KQ and RW participating. We even had Survivor favourite Eliza's insights and ratings. It was the first year that we used player watchdogs. The thread was busy and alive with quality posts and discussion. It was the best thread on this board.
2. What has happened to Edgic in the last few years? Has Edgic hit the wall? Is Edgic suffering from burnout? Has Edgic run its natural course? Should Edgic be put to sleep?
I feel that the last decent season for Edgic was Exile Island. Exile Island was also the last well-edited season. Exile Island was also the last season where only 16 players participated. It is not a coincidence that these three points are co-related.
Edgic has been around for many seasons. It started out small but gradually grew into a busy and vibrant thread. Eventually the burnout factor kicked in, with the loss of several veteran participants, including Edgic inventor KernalQ. At first, as some posters left Edgic, they were replaced with eager newbies. But in the last few seasons, there have been far more burnouts than newbies, and Edgic has suffered as a result.
What else has hurt Edgic?
The editing has sucked the last few seasons. The editors have basically given up on hiding the winner. Yul was obviously the winner after a few episodes of Cook Islands. Heck, Earl was the clear winner after one or two episodes of Fiji. We no longer had several viable winners by the merge, like in past seasons.
Too many players, resulting in too many INV players. It's very sad when over half the players can be eliminated edgically after one or two episodes, as either too INV, too UTR or too OTT.
Too many twists, as well as longer challenges. This results in less player interaction and character development. The show has become a crap-shoot for the players, with MB throwing in more and more twists, in trying to one-up himself.
Too many solid spoilers. CBS used to do a better job in fighting the spread of spoilers. Now they have apparently given up, as we have had accurate boot lists and accurate plot developments, which ruins the season for edgicers who, accidently or otherwise, are exposed to spoilers. The early seasons had a few spoilers but not to the degree of the more recent seasons.
Edgic itself has also had problems.
Edgic has become much too unwieldy, with too many statistics and graphs and charts and S-ratings and ...........
Warrior's visability charts are excellent. The introduction of "mixed" tone ratings is also good, though it still needs tweaking. The MOR differential seems to work.
The INV rating has been a great tool in eliminating possible winners, though some Edgicers still (knowingly or unknowingly) refuse to use it properly.
The graphs are confusing. And I still haven't seen the usefulness or the need for the S-Ratings (though the tabulator does an excellent job).
And then we have the Edgicers and their posts. I don't know about the rest of you, but I skip over posts that are needlessly lengthy and that have way too many pictures in them. I just don't see the purpose in them.
I have also found that some Edgicers refuse to write-off their favourites as edgically having a chance to win. Most recently, we had the Cassandra/Dre supporters. The only players in Fiji who could even be considered edgically as a possible winner were Earl, Alex and Yau-man, and the latter too could safely be written off before the merge.
It is no surprise that the biggest "fights" in Edgic have been with ratings involving tone. And a major reason for this is the fact that too many Edgicers let their personal feelings for certain players affect their ratings. How do we prevent this?
How about chucking the tone ratings altogether? What do tone ratings tell us about the winner? That they are not too positive (PP) or too negative (NN) overall. That's it. We have had winners who are P, we have had winners who are N and we have had winners who are neutral. Eliminating tone ratings would help eliminate the needless debates about whether or not non-winners like Parvati or Cassandra or Stacy are positive or negative. And any obvious PPs or NNs can be brought up under the umbrella of the regular ratings like OTT, etc. For instance, Cirie and Yau-man were much too positive in their edits to win edgically. Likewise, Rocky and Shane were much too negative to win edgically.
