Re: Edgic Charts by Season

This is fascinating shit...I predict this thread wil become very popular!
I am new to Edgic but I gave myself a homework assignment this summer to watch every season of Survivor again just to study editing. These charts will be a big help. It is interesting, to me anyway, that my personal editing ratings for ASS are fairly close to your chart. Maybe I'm good at this and I just don't know it... CRA |

One or two things I noticed. Small things, but just saying:
Was John Raymond really OTTN on the show? Nicole really wasn't OTTN, more of an UTRN or MORN. CPN, even. She wasn't OTT. The Pearl Islands order is a little jumbled after Ryno. Otherwise, good work! Thank you! |

I just noticed that a large share of players in ASS were rated some form of MOR...could this be why ASS sucked so bad?

I put my thanks on the other edgic thread, thinking this one was for chart posting only.
Anyway, again, thanks a lot for the great effort RW! Go Flames! =) bump bump |

My $0.02 (Cdn) is that this is the right place to have discussions about past season's ratings.
If there is consensus to change a rating, I will update the charts accordingly (and I will note the changes if/when they occur). Edited to add: there was a lot of discussion about previous seasons ratings at the end of the S7 thread. I will go through that to see how it compares to what KQ gave me, which is what is posted. |

Ah poor Mateo, not invited to ASS and now demoted to third
The charts are a work of art though, now just to analyze them and find the patterns. Great work. |

What exactly defines "Complex personality"? Is it when we can't get a clear read on them?

Re: Edgic Charts by Season

What do the codes stand for?

The codes are (per KQ):
OTTP (over the top positive) OTTN (over the top negative) OTT (over the top neutral) CPP (complex personality positive) CPN (complex personality negetive) CP (complex personality neutral) UTRP (under the radar positive) UTRN (under the radar negative) UTR (under the radar neutral) MOR (middle of the road) MORP(middle of the road Positive) MOPN(middle of the road Negative) Best to read some of the seasonal Edgic threads to get a sense of what all this means. As for further clarification on complex personality (per millardfilmore): "Over the top" typically means one-dimensional and in your face. A one-dimensional character who gets less attention is probably "under the radar". Burnett typically uses OTN editing for early boots, to make it clear why the player was booted. We have used "complex personality" to mean one of two things in the past: either a lot of character development (e.g., Lex) or a lot of strategic confessionals such that we really see their approach to the game (e.g., Brian and Rob C). In both cases, these are the stars of the show, and they almost always last a long time. If they don't make it to the endgame, their boots are usually a major story (e.g., John C and Deena). We have had some problems with the "middle of the road" category. The term "middle of the road" usually means low-key, inoffensive, conservative, etc., but players with those characteristics are typically just under the radar. We have used MOR to mean "mixed", meaning the player doesn't really fit into one of the other categories. I have the impression that Burnett deliberately edits people OT, CP, or UR (even if he would not use these specific categories), but does not consciously edit them MOR. |

Re: Explanations | ||

RedWing: UTR comes up a lot with early outs as well. It would seem that this would be for two reasons. 1) That the player just didn't offer much in play or personality to edit, or 2) To keep the boot a bit of a viewer surprise, at a time when there has been little story development.
Then of course there are the longer- lived players who may go UTR for much of their time, only to pop up for one or two eps of the bye- bye OTT or CP edit. Bump: Nov. 11, 05 |

This chart is too judgmental based on opinion.

Re: Explanations | ||

Nice job RW. These ratings are based on overall opinions by many posters cast right after the episode was aired. It's not one person's opinion. The overall ratings are more opinion because they have to be tallied.
FLF, nice catch on the heavy early UTR. This is why it's time to separate the INV from UTR. Amber is a perfect example of early UTR=good, early INV=bad. Amber aslo got the majority of the close-ups before challenges. I seem to remember that with Sandra too, but can't recall JennaM in that regard. Anyone re-watching, can you make a mental note of this (especially with JennaM, because her and Amber were mostly UTR). CP or Complex personality is a duel or mult-dimentional character. This person may be shown as a camp contributor, food gather, strategist, etc... A similar person who is one-dimentional would be considered OTT. Rupert is the OTT poster boy, while more of what Rob was edited as in ASS was CP. We will never get 100% agreement on any of these ratings, but unless three or four people who wish to change something I would be inclinded to leave it with the people who voted right after the episode. Re: Explanations

Yes, that RobM and even Amber's UTR's were so often complex is telling. We just could not escape the glare of that damned romance! The Romber noise completely camauflaged the other meaning of their edits.

Re: Explanations | ||

Yea CC is right. In the first chart,should Tijuana be after Rupert or Christy? any other mistakes there?
RW see if you can edit that once we get an answer. Also we have the OTT's in S5 an off-red when it should be the dark green (my mistake anyway) to make them all the same. I put in a request to have both S7 and All-star edgic threads moved to monster island. So, if they seem to disappear, that is where they will be (hopefully). KQ |

Re: Explanations | ||

KQ: I have been putting S7 in the "right" (i.e order of boot) order as I've been working on it. It will get fixed when I do the next upload.
I will also fix the colour problem in the S5 episode boots. If people find other problems of this type, either post them here or PM me or KQ. Thanks in advance. |

S1 Ratings | ||
|
Now that we have the S1 DVD's to fill those empty days before S9 starts, people may want to put their Edgic hats on while watching.
I'll offer up 2 people to debate: Joel: currently MOR (althought could be MORN). He struck me as OTTN ish. Just too damn cocky, sexist and contrasted (unfavourably) to Gretchen, who is definitely OTTP. Jenna's "Moooooo" when voting him off clinched it for me. Rudy: currently MOR (probably MORP). OTTP instead (although obviously not a Gretchen/Colleen type OTTP)? He was the guy the audience wanted to see win, just like Rupert. He had a simple black/white view of the world that would make him OTTN for most other contestants (e.g. being sexist and homophobic), but with Rudy, the audience was supposed to indulge him and not hold it against him. For my fellow Canadians, it would be like putting Don Cherry out there (he'd get an 80% approval rating). Comments? Flames? Lightening? (Little hockey joke there |
