I'm not terribly worried about Survivor going up against American Idol. Even if, worse case scenario, AI completely trounces Survivor in the ratings, it's not like CBS is gonna say "Uh-oh, our show that normally consistently wins its timeslot and is in its 18th season had a bad night, we'd better hurry up and cancel that shit."

Television ratings are crumbling all around us as the networks scramble to figure out how to combat DVR's, kids watching on computers, and iPhones and the like. Wow, 18 seasons in and Survivor is CBS' #1 show in 18-49 year olds. That is pretty damn impressive.

CBS ORDERS TWO MORE EDITIONS OF "SURVIVOR" FOR BROADCAST DURING THE 2009-2010 SEASON

CBS has ordered two more editions of SURVIVOR to be broadcast during the 2009-2010 season. These will mark the 19th and 20th editions of broadcast television's longest-running reality competition series. Jeff Probst, who won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Series, will continue as host.

"SURVIVOR is one of CBS's signature series and a symbol of enduring quality and entertainment on prime time television," said Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. "Every season delivers a fresh new adventure for viewers and a time period-winning performance on the network. We're excited to deliver audiences two more editions of outstanding production values, exotic scenery, new castaways and, of course, our Emmy Award-winning host."

"I am happy to be able produce two more editions of survivor for our loyal fans," said Mark Burnett, Executive Producer of SURVIVOR. "Our show stands for high quality family entertainment and all of us on this team will continue to deliver on this promise."

"We have a unique relationship with our audience," said Jeff Probst, host of SURVIVOR. "They tell us what they like and we listen. It's worked for 18 editions and we're looking forward to delivering two more satisfying seasons!"

This fall, SURVIVOR: GABON (8.4/14, 13.8 million viewers), the franchise's 17th edition, continued its ratings dominance, winning its Thursday (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) time period every week in viewers, adults 18-49 (4.6/12) and adults 25-54 (5.8/14).

The 18th edition, SURVIVOR: TOCANTINS, premiered on Feb. 12 and continues to place first in its time period in viewers (13.61m), adults 18-49 (4.5/13) and adults 25-54 (5.6/14). Last week's episode built on its premiere by +2% in adults 18-49 (4.5/12 from 4.4/13) and by +4% in adults 18-34 (2.6/08 from 2.5/07).

The groundbreaking reality series, which premiered in May 2000, has anchored CBS's winning Thursday lineup since February 2001.

I'm geussing the numbers for Gabon are live+7, and it means that Gabon beat Micronesia (who had 13.6 mill) thus continuing the trend of taking one step forward, two steps back.
Given that Tocantins' live+same day numbers are almost exactly like Gabon's live+7 numbers, I'm absolutely sure Tocantins would've rated higher than Gabon If it weren't for AI this week and NCAA for 2 weeks after that.

Fast National ratings for Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009

A Thursday edition of "American Idol" shook up the normal ratings order for the night, propelling FOX to a win over CBS.

FOX averaged an 8.8 rating/14 share for the night, narrowly beating CBS' 8.7/14 for the lead (the gap in total viewers was a little wider: 15.27 million for FOX vs. 13.95 million for CBS). ABC was a distant third at 4.2/7, beating out NBC's 3.9/6. The CW earned a 1.3/2.

FOX also led among adults 18-49 with a 5.7 rating. CBS finished second in the demographic with a 3.7. NBC took third at 2.5, followed by ABC, 1.9, and The CW, 0.7.

The "American Idol" results show scored an 11.9/19 for FOX at 8 p.m., easily beating the 7.1/11 for "Survivor: Tocantins" on CBS. ABC's "Ugly Betty," 4.6/7, came in third. The special "Secrets of the Furious Five" and "Kath & Kim" put NBC in fourth. The CW got a 1.4/2 from a "Smallville" repeat.

"CSI," 11.2/18, grabbed the lead for CBS at 9. "Hell's Kitchen" drew a 5.6/9 for FOX. A "Grey's Anatomy" rerun, 4.7/7, kept ABC in third, ahead of an "Office" repeat, 3.3/5, and a new "30 Rock," 3.9/6, on NBC. The CW's "Supernatural" dipped ever so slightly from its lead-in.

CBS held the lead at 10 thanks to "Eleventh Hour," 7.7/13. "ER" drew a 5.8/10 for NBC, up a bit from recent weeks, while a "Private Practice" repeat on ABC drew a 3.4/6.

Well this was to be expected thanks to American Idol, but it could have been worse. Survivor was still able to hold its own.
