S11 had no competition in its timeslot, and it was not too long after high-rated palau. went downhill on s12, it was getting slaughtered by AI, DWTS, olympics and never picked back up. Despite the lead in, Guatemala had great ratings for its last few episodes, and I will also mention that Palau ratings were nothing special, they had drop signifigantly after the first few episodes. I think Panama did bad in the ratings because of the competition, yes, but also because I think people found Terry to be uninteresting. There are other Survivor fanatics beside us who are more silent, and supported Terry, but most people I think saw him for what he was(and I like Terry).

Being the best season is not what get people hooked on... comon, in terms of strategy (which is what people consider to be a great season), Micronesia was the best and its ratings did not increase. From what I have talked to older people who are fans of survivor, they are not looking for "nastiness" like that, they like character building. And this season has and will have a lot more of that. That is why I believe this season will reach 15 mil by the finale

I enjoyed Micronesia for what it was, but a season with 20 people can never be a great season, not unless we have a wealth of bonus footage or 2 hour episodes. Besides, I don't think people liked that season as much as has been said. I can't explain Guatemalas viewer increase, but the low Micronesia viewers showed a lack of interest. The fucking HII doesn't even add anything useful to the stratagy spectrum, it merely saves one person when used right. Gabon so far has very interesting characters combined with an emphasis on actal survival instead of challenge winning. Despite what people here think, I don't think challenge wins are as important to the casual viewers as survival. That is the essense of the show, in casual viewers eyes.

I, myself, enjoyed that season thuroughly. I think seasons like Micronesia, and others that involve huge amounts of strategy is just too difficult for common viewers to follow on a week to week basis. That being said, most common viewers I know did enjoy that sesason a lot. Guatemala <3 Exile Island </3 Exile Island just felt tacky. The colors of teh tribes were jarring at best. They had tacky sets and an even tackier theme that felt forced and it was. The whole filming felt orange for some reason, it was as if they put an orange tint on all of the footage, and that felt tacky. I dont know it was just a tacky season all together, and it showed in the ratings.

The true casual viewers are smarter I think, than the people on CBS.com, who we accuse of being the casual viewers. I liked Panama though, I loved the cast. Best post ASS season(though Gabon is taking over). Bobdawgs thread is amazing, one of the threads ever, I have a laminated copy which I reread frequently. If that cast had been in another location, had better editing, and had been broadcast a little bit later, it would have been a hit. I liked Cook Islands on its own terms too, I like all seasons really. It can't hold up to other seasons because of its predicament. Did we really need Sundra, JP, Brad or Flika?

Survivor Gabon has handily won its time period over the past 3 weeks and if it continues to do this, CBS will renew Survivor for 2 more seasons. It's the Fall season that counts because it is how well or poorly the Fall season does against its competition that is the basis upon which CBS decides every January whether to renew Survivor or not. For the past 3 years, the Spring seasons face stiffer competition than the Fall seasons and have lower ratings that the Fall seasons. For the most part, typical casual viewers (that make up 99 percent of all viewers) are not all that knowledgeable about the show and don't think about Survivor other than the hour that they spend watching it. Most viewers do not have the time or the inclination to dissect the show as the posters do here and are simply interested in seeing that the Final 2/3 is composed of at least one person that they find to be likeable or interesting. Many people that I have talked to about Survivor say that the challenges are their favorite part of the show. I would say that the typical viewer doesn't give a crap about whether or not the entire cast is developed but just that some contestants (particularly the finalists) are well developed. I watch Big Brother as a casual viewer and apart from most of the winners and some of the bigger characters, I can't remember many of the contestants that appeared on that show and nor do I care.

Posts: 11 (10/13/08 7:09 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Mypoody, i completely agree with you about Exile Island, the colors just kinda ruined the look of the season, the orange/purple combo just doesnt match good... what i also hated about exile island is that the contestants clothes was just too weird, didnt seem like they were marooned, it was just overall weird what the casual viewers that I have talked to say is that they really like the survival aspect of the show, and this season has a lot of that since they are in africa in gabon around lots of cool elephants and a tough terrain, unlike micronesia where everything is easy for survival... i feel really good about this seasons ratings

WTF?!?!? it also pisses me off the fact that they only do a worse job each season that goes with the website, remember how cool it used to be until palau or maybe exile island when they had popularity polls, etc...

Everything seemed so mechanical and overdone. Like the bungee cord challenge (with danielle/courtney in a bungee cord type contraption. It just didnt feel like survivor. Maybe it was the way it was designed or dressed up, it just didnt feel authentic. Felt like I was tuning into an episode of Real World challenge or whatever. Whereas in Gabon, they managed to make bumper boats and a slip n' slide seem very tribal and authentic. Simplistic is the word. I think you're right though, the clothes and the colors, even the people themselves seemed kinda weird, out of place. I can't put my finger on it, but when I watch it, it's hard to enjoy. I think each season they put a different color tone/tint to the film to make each location feel unique. I noticed in Micronesia teh colors were extremely bright and high contrasted, whereas in Exile they were dull and somewhat green/orange, which really killed it for me.

Posts: 2174 (10/14/08 10:23 AM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	I think a lot of the hardcore fans went into the Exile Island season with lower expectations mainly due to the fact that they were returning to Panama yet again, and because of the re-used location there was a twist being forced down our throats more so than ever before. I think it was also the first season that really started getting away from the survival aspect of the show, which was somewhat jarring since we had just finished watching Survivor: Guatemala, a much harsher season in terms of physical conditions. Granted, the majority of things that happen to the people on this show would never happen to people who were actually stranded somewhere, but with this season and all the emphasis they put on Exile Island and the hidden immunity idol, the survival aspect of things was significantly diminished and it really did just seem like more of a "Real World/Road Rules Challenge" type of thing as opposed to an actual season of Survivor. In terms of the survival aspect of the Exile Island season, I always think back to a comment Brian C. made to Rafe on the "Survivors Strike Back" blog after the s12 premiere that I think sums it up pretty good. I don't remember word-for-word, but it was a sarcastic comment, something like "Gee, how awful for those Survivors, that 'smash the coconut' challenge they had to do at the beginning of the game sure looked tough. We were lucky, all we had to do was HIKE 11 MILES THROUGH A GUATEMALAN JUNGLE IN 110 DEGREE HEAT!!!"

Personally I felt like the whole season seemed somewhat forced. I DO give the season credit for only having 16 people and somewhat better editing/characterization than a lot of the other post-ASS seasons, but other than that I just couldn't really get into it like I do most of the other seasons.

That, and the fact that Exile Island was the first season where they started fucking around with the intro theme. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a geeky enough Survivor fan that that really pissed me off (although I'm used to it now).

I agree that there are a lot of technical flaws, and there are many things to be turned off by, but I found the cast good enough to overcome those flaws. I wish the editing had been more fair though. For casual viewers, there was nothing remarkable about it. In place of going to a novel location, they married the Exile Island concept introduced in Palau with the HII introduced in Guatemala. The problem was that Exile Island/HII had very little impact on game because the person who found it won the first 5 Individual Immunity Challenges and was also saved by Bruce's med-evac. Aside from making Terry safe at the Final 4 TC, the HII made no difference in the outcome. This season would have been better if Terry had won. We have yet to have a season of American Survivor where a person won by winning all the individual immunities after all his/her allies have been voted out. At least that (Terry winning) would have been a Survivor first that would have set it apart.

Are you saying that a season is ok only if it meets certain outcomes? And what do you mean generic? I'll grant you the location and the challenges were, but then again, I'm usually bored or at least uninterested in most of the challenges. The editing was bad. In the episode where Bruce was evacuated, there was a scene with Aras decribing the rice situation, which is interesting and pertains to survival. Then the they cut right away to a totally pointless diatribe by Terry on how he needs to continue to kick their asses. I know noone here will agree with me, but it is practically impossible to have a boring Survivor contestent. It is just fascinating watching a person in a exotic location, and watching human nature unfold. In my opinion, it is purely bad editing, not "mactors"or boring people that ruin the show. That is part of the reason a 20 person Survivor can never be satisfying.
