Leave Your Computer on or Turn it Off? |
Lead | |
|
On or Off? I hear different things from so called "experts" all the time. "Never turn your computer off. Just let it 'go to
sleep'". "Always turn the power off when you aren't using your computer". For the past year I've been turning mine off but I just
realized that if I do that now I will have to manually turn off my external drive every time. I hadn't been doing that and I just realized that it was no
longer readable by the computer and wasn't saving backups with Time Machine. So I think from now on I am just going to leave it on. What do you do and what
do you think is the correct thing to do?

I leave it on. I turn off the internet modem tho.
This is what I do so it is the correct way. Aren't those turn it off people just a little too concerned with wasting electricity? |

When we first got ours, our computer nerd young freind told us to just put it on standby. Then we got a virus and were told to always turn it off. So right now
it's off when not in use.

You don't leave notebooks on. It is ok for a desktop.

Good rule of thumb is pants off/computer on and vise versa.

I leave mine on 24/7 - except of course when we lose power... not for much longer though.... Soon there will be a generator humming away when we lose power!!
I don't even let the computer go to sleep. I just have a screen saver that comes on. Never had a problem. You DO however, have to clean it out more. With it running all the time, it collects a LOT more dust and stuff. Especially if you have a cat or dog or both. And NEVER use your vacuum to clean it out. The static generated by the vacuum can destroy your motherboard. Just use compressed air. And No, I don't waste my money on those stupid little air cans. I have a compressor in the garage and I just take my computer up there a few times a year to clean it out.

Doesn't your compressor in the garage have the same static issues a vacuum would have?

Depends on whether you're a greenie or if you want to decrease your computer's life time (by about a month of so). Powering up your computer decreases
your hardware lifetime, due to the amount of energy that is required to power up a computer (it works harder at powering up than it is to operate normally), so
this is an argument for keeping your comp on. However, leaving your computer on without it on hibernate (standby merely reduces the computer to minimal energy
use) releases up to 20 lbs of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere per month, or something like that. Thus, that's a reason to turn off your comp. It's
really just a matter of opinion and how much time you want to wait (immediate start up or a few minutes for the comp to start up). Performance isn't
affected by turning on/off your computer.

Always on, standby when not in use. I've had a fan go out though, because it's always running.
