i've been chewing on this, and it just seems like too much of an oversimplification. i don't really think that the hometown, race, aspirations of a person could be categorized as "superficial." they aren't litmus tests, but they *are* indicators of the type/category of player that they might end up becoming. this is not to say that they are predestined to become that player, just that if you place a Californian hippie bartender in a certain type of situation, 89 out of 100 times he's going to play the game a certain way. and some of us (like myself), think that a *mix* of people, with different backgrounds, intentions, etc., will more often than not make for a more interesting viewing experience.

I agree. If you've looked at my past posts, you should know I'm 1 of main people who say Survivor is not chess. HOWEVER, that being said, I don't like pre-judging people based on where they are from, what they look like, or their occupations. As I explained in 1 of the the season ratings thread, that is the reason why I tend to like players based on their level of skill. It feels a little more objective to me, and I can judge them on "merit" as opposed to who they are as a person (which is basically moralizing). That's what I meant by "superficial". I didn't mean that with a negative connotation necessarily, but clearly, they are surface indicators. They are definitely helpful in gaining insight to each character/player, but at the end of the day, it's more important to judge them on what they actually end up doing and what's under the book cover so to say

I have no problem with people favoring people from certain hometowns, of being a certain race, of being a certain age, etc. We ALL judge and have subjective biases and favorites on some level, and that's okay. But they should own up to those things being the reasons for liking that individual instead of smokescreen reasons like "recruits" or "mactors" and crap like that. When they try to justify it with stupid things like big cast sizes and too many twists, it just seems really hypocritical and hollow. In any case, this season seems to be more like the "old days," so hopefully this will appease the bitchers and ensure that they love the season. Of course, many will still find something to complain about (like HIIs still being around, a cast that doesn't compare to Borneo's, blah blah blah)

BTW, I agree, you should watch Borneo and any season you haven't yet if you can Kel. I personally was bored with it, but it's cool to watch it as a reference point, especially as the father/mother of Survivor. Heh, I just assumed everyone knew Joel and the rest of the Borneo cast. He wasn't really a strategist at all on the original season. He was mainly an alpha male who was sort of perceived as a sexist, so that's why I had fun playing up that angle when I was playing as him lol (at least back on Quechua)
