I wasn't a fan of P2 on the show but he's a legitimate success story and anytime the winner is a success that means their win wasn't a mistake IMO.

Scotty has had success as far as album selling, but there's no way him winning wasn't a mistake. He's no better of a singer than Lee or Kris, who both flopped massively, he just happened to be put in the right genre.
Also, I can't help wondering that if "Home" wasn't attached to the Olympics, if Phillip would've been in the same boat as the two of them.

Whether that's because of Home being attached to the Olympics or not is beside the point IMO.

Not every Idol gets the same breaks, and making money (or not) doesn't mean the "right" one won. With the right promotion, you can get almost anything to sell. I would agree that longevity means the right one won though, but I doubt Phillips will have that, judging from how "Gone, Gone, Gone" will probably only manage to, what, do 1/4th of what "Home" did and that song was just on top for him?

Justify it all you like but P2 took his AI win and became a success. Whether that's because of Home being attached to the Olympics or not is beside the point IMO.

P2 isn't my type of artist necessarily but I enjoyed his album when I heard it and there's no way I can deny his talent or begrudge his success
It obviously makes you feel better to think Idol made a mistake with P2 despite his success

I don’t begrudge him success either, I just think it’s idiotic that you judge right and wrong by money sold. lmao If Kelly and Carrie had both flopped on their first albums, would that then mean they were the “wrong” winners to you?
Makes me “feel” better? Not so much. I just thought it was a rule of thumb that when someone who can barely hit the notes beats someone who can that it would be considered a mistake (and that goes for every WGWG besides Cook, not just Phillip).

Mantasia's voice is horribly abrasive (a fact she seems utterly unaware of), while Lee & Philip can hardly sing at all. So I don't see how anybody can think any of them was the right winner. Even in weak years like season 3 and 9 there were plenty of better people to pick from and everybody in season 11's top 10 except maybe Heejun was a vastly better singer than Philip.

and why doesn't that go for Cook? why are the rules different for him? He wasn't the best singer on his season but clearly you think his win was fine.

I think whoever the public votes for is the RIGHT winner, regardless of their success. However, I'm not sure how YOU can say someone is the wrong winner, based on YOUR personal opinion of what you like or don't like. If the public votes for them then they are the right winner.
P2 can sing. Is he as good a technical singer as Jessica or others who were on his season? No he's not. But it's become clear that these singing shows are not JUST based on who is the best singer. If it were we'd only get one type of singer/artist and that would be the big belter. That would be boring IMO.
It's not so much if the BEST singer wins, as long as a good singer does win, for me as a viewer of a

I think I'm starting to disconnect having to get my favourite to win and just hope they get far enough to get a record deal. Winning is great still but I won't freak out if my favourite loses anymore.
