Episode 3 - "Half the tribe are swing votes!"

Nighttime Tension

Galu returns from tribal council and everyone is quiet over the arguments at tribal council. Monica is afraid of her future in the game "I survived tonight, just barely. I know I'm in trouble if we go back to tribal council. I'm living day-to-day at this point." Russell calls the tribe together around their campfire and addresses them as a group. He says that the tribe needs to be united if they're going to pull off a win, and they can't have dissention like Brett was trying to stir up. Shambo comments on the speech "Russell's a good coach. He's trying to rally everyone together. But all the positive thinking in the world isn't gonna help us win. We need to start getting rid of weak links, and Brett leaving didn't help us." Erik and John talk with the rest of the tribe about how upsetting it was to have Brett throwing them under the bus the way he did. "I think things got a little heated at tribal council," says John, "I'm just not the type of person to take that sort of thing lying down, is all."

Common Bonds

Jaison and Liz sit in the shelter, Jaison eating a piece of fruit while Liz chats with him about how his education is going. Liz describes her feelings on Jaison "I'm really happy that Jaison is our leader, because he's smart, athletic, and he's really willing to listen to everyone. He's like…the perfect person for this game." Jaison offers a piece of fruit to Liz and she accepts before asking what field he's going into. Jaison responds and then gives his thoughts on Liz to the camera "Out of everyone on this tribe, Liz is easily the one I'm closest to. She and I are kinda bonded because she's a lawyer and that's where I hope to be a few years down the road." Liz asks him where his head is in terms of the game and he tells her he's not sure yet, but he has her back. Liz says she'll watch his back too "I like Jaison, and I just want to say to everyone watching at home that this is not, like, a showmance or anything. But I definitely want him on my side, because that would make my alliance THAT much stronger."

Scrambling For Safety

John and Monica are cuddled up together in the shelter, discussing the previous tribal council and how Monica's neck is on the line. John says that if she wants to stay, they've gotta find an in with the majority. Monica complains about how all Shambo does is complain about losing. Monica states her feelings "Russell wants to say that our tribe needs to stay united, and if he really wanted that, then why is Shambo still here? I mean, yeah she's strong, I guess. But she just makes trouble everywhere she goes." John talks about how their best bet is to deal with Yasmin and Kelly, because they're younger, and Monica agrees. He tells the camera "I doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Monica is in trouble. And if my ally is in trouble, then I'M in trouble But there's other targets on this tribe, and all it takes is a little finesse, and things can change in our favor."

Monica is then shown talking with Kelly and Yasmin in the woods. She says that she knows she's on the outs, but she doesn't think it's smart to keep Shambo around over her. Kelly discusses the moment "I like Monica. I do. I think she's a really kind soul, and I think it's gotta be hard for her to be in the position she's in right now. I mean, I'm not just gonna shut her down because I'm not aligned with her." Monica says that Shambo is going to target the two girls once she's gone, and Yasmin agrees, stating that Shambo is crazy about hard work and strength in challenge. She thinks Monica may have a point "Shambo does not have an off switch. She's just work, work, work all day long. And I know I haven't done that good in the challenges, so who knows if she's gonna start coming after me once Monica is gone."

Gone Fishing

Russell and Ben are out in the water with Ben showing Russell how to properly use the Hawaiian sling. Ben gestures first with his hand and then actively demonstrates, snagging a fish in the attempt. Russell H. is impressed "I've been camping and hunting before, but I don't think I could've figured that spear out in a million years without Ben. Never thought I'd see the day he was showin' me how to do things though. Haha." Russell then dives underwater and after a few attempts, manages to land a fish, albiet one smaller than Ben's. Ben laughs and recounts the event "He comes out of the water with this little minnow, but hey, what can I say? Not bad for a first try. Russ is a good guy. Like, me and him just click together. That's something great to have in this game. Someone who you just work great with."

Russell and Ben return to camp together with about half a dozen fish, which earns them the praise of the tribe. Natalie expresses relief and happiness over the bounty "I am NOT just some girly girl who can't hack it in the wilderness. But if we've got two guys on the tribe that are gonna be bringing in food for us day after day, then that's just makin' my life a little easier." Ben descales and prepares the fish as Russell H. recounts the day's labor. He goes into great detail and then explains why "I want them to know how hard I'm workin' for this tribe. I know Marisa's got a lot of people wrapped around her finger, and I want those people to know that maybe she ain't the best ally to have around." Russell continues to tell his fish tale as Ben smirks over his work, and Marisa rolls her eyes. She scoffs at Russell's actions "He thinks that catching fish is suddenly gonna make everything all better. He's been trying to control this tribe since day one, and I don't care if he brings home a freakin' shark. I'm sending him home."

Pep Talk

Before the challenge, Shambo calls the Galu tribe together to try and pep them up for a win. She says she does not want to go back to tribal council and she wants to actually get a win under her belt, because there's no reason why Foa Foa keeps beating them. Shambo explains her speech "This tribe needs a good, old-fashioned kick in the ass if we're gonna win a challenge. None of this babying crap anymore. I'm gonna tell it like it is. Simple as that." Shambo goes on to say specifically to Monica that if they lose one more challenge, she's going home. Monica and a few other tribe members seem shocked as Shambo goes on, saying it's just a matter of who brings strength to the tribe. Russell S. expresses the most irritation with Shambo's comments "Why would you call someone out like that? How does that benefit anyone? Shambo's a hard worker, but man, her mouth works faster than her mind sometimes."

Reward/Immunity Challenge 3 - Bon Appétit

Jeff welcomes Foa Foa and Galu to the challenge and reveals that Brett was voted out of Galu at their tribal council. Jeff then announces that the challenge will once again be for reward and immunity combined. The two tribes will send one member at a time to compete against the other tribe in a gross food competition. Each member will be presented with a Samoan delicacy, and whichever player finishes eating first wins a point for their tribe. First tribe to four points wins immunity, and Jeff reveals a tarp, blankets, pillows, and a hammock, for comfort. The leaders choose the order for their tribe to compete in the challenge, and they get started.

First up for Foa Foa is Ben up against John for Galu, eating sea worms, which John finishes first. Russell H. goes up against Erik eating grubs, and Russell finishes first, tying the score for Foa Foa. In the next round, Mick goes up against Russell S. and the two have to eat raw eel. Russell finishes first, but only by a few seconds. Round 4, Jaison goes up against Shambo and the food is live Yellowfin heart. Shambo downs it like it's nothing, giving her tribe a 3-1 lead and leaving only one more point before a win. Looking to keep her tribe in the game, Betsy manages to finish a raw bat before Dave, which puts the tribes at 3-2. However, in the next round, after several minutes of gagging, Monica manages to finish her serving of pickled sea slugs before Liz, giving Galu their first win of the game. They gather their winnings and head back to camp as Foa Foa leaves, not looking forward to tribal council.

The Thrill of Victory

Having won their first challenge, the Galu tribe celebrates together, happy to have finally won something. Monica hugs one of the tribe's pillows as John laughs and calls her the tribe's hero. She laughs triumphantly "I was sick for a couple hours after eating those slugs, but it felt AWESOME to be the one who won it for us." John and Erik carry Monica around on their two shoulders, Dave announcing for Monica like she's a champion boxer. Shambo comments on this "Yeah, it felt great to win and all, but c'mon, Monica got a point just like I got a point. Just like Russell got a point. She's not some savior because of that."

Russell and Dave help set up the tribe's tarp in their shelter and Kelly, Monica and Yasmin test out the new blankets and pillows. Yasmin comments on how great it feels to get a pillow after sleeping on bamboo for a week. Kelly mentions that it's gonna feel nice to not have to deal with rain for the rest of the game, thanks to their tarp. "This is what we needed," she says, "Just falling back and having my head hit that pillow…my God. It's the best feeling in the world." Russell S. smiles and laughs with Dave as they tie the two ends of the hammock between two trees, saying that he hopes it'll hold his weight. He comments happily on the tribe's status "This was a win we needed. It gives us some momentum, and we're just gonna power forward. This game is ours now."

Jockeying for Position

The Foa Foa tribe returns to camp, dejected after their first loss, and finds that their fire has gone out in their absence. Russell and Ben get to work on getting the fire going again while Marisa and Ashley head into the shelter to lie down. Russell H. expresses disappointment at Marisa and Ashley's work ethic and says it's crazy that he's in danger of going home because of those two. He tells us "Those two are the damn ring leaders of that alliance an' all they do is sit around all day while I'm bustin' my ass trying to keep this tribe goin'. How the hell are you gonna play the game like that?"

Liz and Marisa try to solidify their numbers by bringing a fifth member, Jaison. Liz explains the choice of Jaison "We're definitely going for the all-girl thing, but we need strength if we're gonna keep our tribe strong. I have a good connection with Jaison, so he's the best bet for numbers at this point." Liz tells him that they want him to be in an alliance with them and Marisa tells him that Russell is the target at tribal council. Jaison asks why Russell needs to be the target and Marisa responds by telling him straight-up that Russell is a schemer and needs to go as soon as possible. Jaison sums up his feelings "I think we need Russell for tribe strength, but at the same time, Liz is probably my closest ally and I don't know if I can go against her."

Ashley talks to Betsy about the night's vote and tells her that the numbers are against Russell. She tells "When Russell goes home, he's got some allies on this tribe that are gonna be upset, like Betsy. And I really don't want to leave anyone out in the cold, because we need to be united as a tribe." Ashley continues to tell Betsy that she's like a mom to her, and she doesn't want Betsy getting caught in the blast when Russell goes down. Betsy tells her, straight-up, that she's not going to write Russell's name down. She states "I gave Russell my word and I'm a woman of my word. I'm not gonna compromise my integrity, even if it means getting voted out down the road." Ashley expresses disappointment "Betsy wasn't really down with voting out Russell and it kinda sucks because she doesn't get that sticking with us girls is her best chance."

Ben talks to Natalie in private about the vote. He asks her where her head is at and she tells him that Marisa really wants Russell out. Ben responds by asking her how Russell going home benefits the tribe and how it benefits her. Natalie says she doesn't know. Ben tells the camera "I don't want Russell to go home. If Russell goes home, for all I know, I'm next. So I needed to find someone who was gonna here me out. Natalie's a southern girl. I'm a southern guy. Russell's a southern guy. She's someone who can understand where we're comin' from." Ben tells her that with Russell gone, the tribe is going to keep losing challenges, and she'll be the weak link with the girls. Natalie tells him she'll think about what he said.

Natalie and Mick are tending to the campfire and Natalie asks Mick what he thinks about the vote. He tells her that he's been hearing Marisa and Russell's names getting thrown around. Natalie tells him that she's in an alliance with Marisa, but she doesn't know if it's smart for her to stick with that alliance. She tries to make a decision "It's a really hard choice. I mean, me and Marisa teamed up on day one. But she's not helpin' the tribe and Russell is. I could go either way at this point."

Just before tribal council, Marisa gathers her girl alliance together to make sure everyone is still on the same page. They all agree that Russell should go and put their hands in to solidify the alliance. Marisa is pleased with the events "I am ninety-nine percent sure that Russell is going home tonight, and honestly, it's not a moment too soon. I think he's already started getting into some people's heads, and that's dangerous." Russell H. talks with Betsy and Ben before they head out, telling them that it's Marisa's time to go home. He tells the camera "I'm not feelin' entirely confident tonight, but I've got a chance. Marisa thinks she's got this game locked up, but a cornered tiger is when it's most dangerous."

Tribal Council #4 - Foa Foa Tribe

Jeff welcomes the tribe in and starts by asking Marisa about the previous tribal council and how she and Russell were at each others' throats. She says that things haven't changed because Russell hasn't really made an effort to bury the hatchet. Russell H. retorts "Well maybe if you got your ass outta the shelter more than five minutes a day, I'd have a reason to make nice with you." Marisa rolls her eyes, but doesn't say anything until Jeff prompts her by asking what things are like at camp. She tells him that just because she doesn't work 24-7 doesn't mean that she's not contributing to camp life.

Jeff moves on to Jaison, asking him why he, as leader, hasn't done anything to quell the conflict in the tribe. Jaison asks Jeff in return if he would like to step in and play peacemaker between the two, if he was in Jaison's shoes. Jaison continues by saying that he thinks one of Marisa or Russell is going home and whoever it is, the tribe needs to stay united in the wake of tribal council. Ashley says that she agrees, because even if they don't like each other, Galu is still the bigger threat. Russell H. retorts by saying that she only feels that way because she thinks he's going home.

Jeff moves on to ask Natalie what she's basing her vote on. She responds by saying that she has to vote for the person who she thinks won't help her get as far in the game as the other will. Russell H. interjects and asks Jeff if he can say something, before making his plea. He tells the tribe that he's the strongest guy they've got and voting him out would be suicide. He tells Mick and Jaison in particular that voting him out will just get them voted out in one or two more rounds, because the girls are sticking together. Marisa attacks back, saying that there is no all-girl alliance, and that Russell has been paranoid and coming after her since the first day in the game, and she's going to be happy when he's gone. Russell H. fires back "You think you've got this all wrapped up, but lemme tell ya something. Half the tribe are swing votes! You ain't as safe as you think you are tonight, sweetheart." Marisa calls him a sexist and says that the only reason he's been gunning for her so hard is because he's intimidated by a woman that's not afraid to stand up to him. Russell H. yells at her in anger, telling her he's never mistreated a woman and that it's her bitchy attitude, not her gender, which put a target on her back.

With tension ready to boil over, Jeff sends the players to vote. Marisa proudly holds up her vote for Russell "A week is too long for anyone to have to spend with you." Russell H. is then shown voting for Marisa "You go home tonight and you know you messed with the wrong guy." Several others cast their votes and Jaison holds a vote up to the camera "I don't want to do this…but I have to." Natalie is last and speaks her peace "I think you made my decision for me with how you acted at tribal council."

Jeff tallies the votes and reads them one at a time:

MARISA

MARISA

MARISSA

RUSSELL

RUSS

RUSSELL

RUSSELL

Russell frowns nervously while Marisa smiles confidently with only two votes left to read.

MARISA

Marisa's smile vanishes, having though she had more votes locked up, and the smile inverts to a frown as the final vote is read.

MARISA

Marisa looks dejectedly at her tribe, feeling betrayed by Jaison, although it was Natalie who betrayed her, while Jaison stayed true and voted for Russell. Jeff snuffs her torch and she walks off, leaving three of her allies in the minority on Foa Foa as she becomes the fourth person voted out of Survivor: Samoa. Jeff tells the tribe that their division cannot be good for the tribe as a whole, but he hopes that removing a troublesome tribemate will help to unite them. He wishes the tribe goodnight and they head off.

Marisa's Final Words

Marisa wipes away a tear as she gives her elimination confessional. She said she really trusted that people were telling her the truth when they told her they would vote for Russell. She says it sucks to have wanted to play so hard, only to have him outlast her. She wishes luck to Ashley, Liz and Natalie and hopes that they find some way to stay in the game and win it for her, and then says that she should be happy that at least she wasn't the game's first boot.

Episode 4 - "No More Playing Nice"

On Foa Foa, Liz questions the loyalty of her tribemates in the search to find out who voted for Marisa instead of Russell H.

On Galu, Kelly and Yasmin bond with the players outside their alliance in an effort to keep his tribe from turning on each other.

And a swap shatters alliances and sends players through a loop as they scramble to keep themselves safe.
