Bran's critiques of the story - the good knights should always win and things like that - are a critique of the entire series. Who you think as the good guys may not be good and most certainly will not win without a cost. Plus it's got Howland Reed in it! No one is more anticipated. Brienne's chapters are painful on re-read b/c I don't think they are significant in any way to the larger story. I didn't learn anything new about current events nor do I care about Brienne's quest b/c I know where Arya and Sansa are they're fine. They're better off if Brienne doesn't find them. I liked some of the history - I believe we got the Defiance of Duskendale story in there - but that could have been done anywhere. Fun Easter Egg with the painting on her shield. That's all I got. Oh, and Pod. I like Pod. If Cat hanged that little guy I'm going to be mad.

I believed that somehow they are going to be the key to the ending, with their moving castle and knowledge of the trees, just all of it makes me think they will be key. Of course, they may only be around to be completely destroyed, ending the nature religion as the Fire God or whatever takes over, sort of an updated Celtic tale of Christianity vs the woad "little" people. That is probably more George's style anyway. Maybe they just don't want to contract actors yet since the storyline hasn't even bloomed in the books that much, and they have Tonks that needs lines and stuff to do. Bugs me though. Also DEFINITELY to get old Howland to confirm or deny Jon's parentage.

Her original role was supposed to be small, but cast and crew fell in love with her (the actress) so they worked hard to find more places to use her just to keep her on set, and employed. I assume they are doing the same, probably taking most of the whore roles until the end. Watch her show up at the docks with Arya in some future season.

I assume shadow demon, especially since her birthing one has shown up in several previews for the season. So, this episode has some pretty major book-to-show deviation. Some I like and some I don't. Here are the ones I noticed. 1. Bronn is the LC of the Gold Cloak instead of some random knight. I like this change, since nothing in it prevents Bronn from carrying on his role as Tyrion's personal enforcer from the book and lets them cut a character who ends up being of no real consequence anyway. 2. Stannis has no children (so no Shireen) and his wife is locked away in a tower rather than being the original devotee of Melisandre like in the books. Cuts had to be made and I suppose this one in the big picture is not a big deal. 3. Explicitly showing the wights collecting the male baby and Jon getting caught spying by Craster. I guess the first spells it out simpler for viewers than the implications in the book, and the second will keep the theme of Jon learning to obey before he can be a leader. Which, of course, will culminate in his having obey Qhorin's command to kill him. So, I guess it's OK. 4. Melisandre explicitly seducing Stannis and Stannis being so easily seduced. Don't really like this one as it makes Stannis seem to willing to give in to expediency. I suppose it's not 100% clear in the books that Stannis didn't fuck Melisandre but I always thought the shadow baby was more a result of a ritual, which is why Stannis appears gaunter every time she births one--there's only so much she can draw off of him. I really wish they hadn't gone this route.

I think Mormont knows Craster leaves the babies out but Jon actually seeing the Others is a whole new ball game. That's a real enemy to fight - they're not just a rumor anymore. I think Mormont thought he just left them out to die - not that there were bad guys running around out there. I'm more bothered Ghost wasn't around to rip Craster's arm off. Ghost is around to scare Gilly but not protect Jon? Bad dog!

What is clear is that the shadow demons are somehow drawn from Stannis by Melisandre and take quite a bit out of both him and her to produce, which is why she can't just go around creating them willy-nilly to off all his enemies. Whether they are produced as a by-product of sex or some arcane blood ritual or the like isn't quite clear. IIRC, Stannis can't seem to remember exactly what happens--recalls it as nightmares or bad dreams or something.

The only reason it's not explicit in the books is because of the POV issue. Davos doesn't see it and he's our only POV on Dragonstone.
