Earlier tonight, the 16 semifinalists sang for a spot in the final 10. Here are the 16 contestants: Hamed Anousheh - 25 years old - from Cologne Silvia Amaru - 21 years old - from Hamburg Luca Haenni - 17 years old - from Uetendorf, Switzerland (Swiss and Austrian citizens are eligible to compete on DSDS, as those countries don't have their own Idol franchises) Fabienne Rothe - 16 years old - from Dormagen Jesse Ritch - 20 years old - from Schoenbuhl-Urtenen, Switzerland Vanessa Krasniqi - 17 years old - from Iserlohn (runner-up in Das Supertalent 2008 [the German version of America's Got Talent]) Joey Heindle - 18 years old - from Freising Ursula "Uschi" James - 20 years old - from Bad Kissingen (by way of the USA; her father is African-American and her mother is German) Dennis Richter - 27 years old - from Berlin (his father is Turkish) Jana Skolina - 21 years old - from Oberhausen (by way of Latvia) Daniele Negroni - 16 years old - from Regensburg Angel Burjansky - 16 years old - from Sankt-Augustin Christian Schoene - 34 years old (some Idol shows have higher age maximums than American Idol does) - from Frankfurt am Main Marcello Ciurlia - 16 years old - from Seligenstadt (his parents are from Italy) Kristof Hering - 22 years old - from Hamburg Thomas Pegram - 27 years old - from Hohenems, Austria These glamour shots are a lot better than those that American Idol uses, that's for sure. These 16, even the uglier ones, look downright presentable. The judges for DSDS are: Dieter Bohlen, who was one-half of the 1980s band Modern Talking; Bruce Darnell, who is pretty much a butch version of Miss J from ANTM; and Natalie Horler, the front-woman of the dance act Cascada. While their American Idol counterparts spent part of the last round in Las Vegas, the DSDS contestants went to the Maldives, an island country in the Indian Ocean. All my favourite international Idol shows have died out so glad to here DSDS is still around, although I still question their taste from having Alexander Klaws and Daniel K in the original F3. Without hearing them yet I'll predict Hamed to win.

(Please note that DSDS has its performance and results shows on the same night.) I also forgot to mention that Thomas was not initially part of the semifinals, but Dieter Bohlen added him before tonight's performances. (Maybe he took a hint from his American Idol counterparts?)

And they have better production values, too. It helps if you understand German, but it's not necessary.

During his performance, he claimed, the wrong voting number was assigned to him. (Shades of AI in 2005, when they had to re-do the performances in the second week of finals because of similar circumstances. Mikalah Gordon was eliminated that week.) A poll was conducted on the RTL.de website, and 1.2 million votes later, the public voted against Christian returning to the competition. And in fact, his fellow competitors were happy that Christian wasn't coming back. Silvia Amaru, one of the 10 finalists, said that it would be unfair. And when it was all said and done, the lone Austrian, Thomas Pegram, was the first to leave. But that wasn't all. One of the finalists, Kristof Hering, revealed on the show that he was in a relationship with a 52-year-old man. Kristof is 22 years old. And lol at how soap opera-y this is. A 22yo with a 52yo. Voting whether or not to let a contestant back into the show, with contestants adding their thoughts. It's Drama City.

Last week's bottom 3 were Kristof Hering, Thomas Pegram (eventual eliminated contestant), and Daniele Negroni. This week, Silvia Amaru, Joey Heindle, and Jesse Ritch were in the bottom 3, and it was the end of the road for Silvia. So far, Fabienne, Hamed, Luca, and Vanessa are the only ones not to have been in the bottom 3. More controversy: The live shows are filmed in Cologne, and the city government wants to enforce a law banning minors from working past 10PM. Last year, RTL incurred a fine of 15,000 Euros because of underage DSDS finalist Sebastian Wurth working (in this case, performing on stage) past 10PM. This year, four of the finalists are under 18: Fabienne, Luca, Joey, and Vanessa. Also, the Hamburger Morgenpost (a German newspaper) alleges that Thomas Pegram's elimination (and that of Silvia Amaru) were forecast based on the number of likes they received on their Facebook pages. Thomas received the lowest number of likes among the 10 finalists, and Silvia received the lowest number of likes among the 9 remaining finalists.

Hamed, Luca, and Jesse did. And in a shocking result, Hamed was eliminated. Controversy continues to plague DSDS. The judges had a massive spat while critiquing Joey Heindle's performance. While Bruce Darnell and Natalie Horler were trying to be constructive, Dieter outright hated the performance, and even walked out for a few minutes. Daniele and Kristof, meanwhile, have exchanged heated words with each other in the DSDS mansion, and it almost came to blows. Kristof called Daniele "antisocial" and Daniele called Kristof a "%%$%".

Here's what's happened since last time: 31 March 2012 - The six finalists performed duets and solo performances. Daniele and Kristof, interestingly enough, had to sing together, and what did they sing? "YMCA" by the Village People. In the end, Fabienne, Joey, and Kristof fell into the bottom three, and ultimately Kristof was eliminated. Kristof had to endure not just the wrath of the judges and Daniele, but he also received threats from viewers, such as "I'll cut your eggs off" and "Get out of DSDS if you value your life." I don't think that anyone on American Idol has ever been subject to such vitriol. 07 April 2012 - Each of the final five performed one song "unplugged" and a "power song". Luca, Fabienne, and Joey were in the bottom three, and Joey was eliminated. With six eliminations in the books, there are four finalists remaining: two from Germany (Fabienne Rothe and Daniele Negroni) and two from Switzerland (Jesse Ritch and Luca Haenni). Daniele hasn't been in the bottom three since the first week of finals, while the remaining three have two bottom-three appearances apiece. The judges predicted that Fabienne would get the boot, and sure enough, Fabienne did. Joining her in the bottom two was Jesse Ritch. 21 April 2012 - The penultimate performance show saw the three boys doing three songs again. Daniele Negroni was the first to qualify for the Grand Final, leaving the two Swiss boys Jesse and Luca in the bottom two. And in the end, Jesse got the boot, setting up a Germany vs. Switzerland Grand Final. Daniele was in the bottom three in the first week of finals, but since then has stayed clear of the danger zone. Luca was up for elimination three times. Luca is only 17, and Daniele is 16. The Grand Final is this Saturday.

Luca Haenni is the 9th winner of Deutschland sucht den Superstar, and the first non-German citizen to win the competition ever. In a close result, he beat Daniele Negroni with 52.85% of the vote. His coronation song is "Don't think about me".
