Some scholars believe that Stoker himself died from syphilis, but the evidence is inconclusive. Nonetheless, the novel could not be more explicit about the invisible infection that seeps into the bloodstream and slowly turns its victims into demented fiends: which is what Dracula does to his prey and also what syphilis often produced in the age before antibiotics.

Why were there soo many closeups of his dirty fingertails? vomits The acting by everyone else was ok and I did like the syphiliis angle. The part at the end was cheesy though.

I loved the campy over-the-top sexual symbolism. When Dracula split open the fig, I couldn't stop laughing. And the impaling of Lucy by her husband... If anything the story felt a bit rushed and could have used an extra half hour for some fleshing out. I couldn't see Van Helsing as Van Helsing, to me he was Inspector Poirot. Vlad's fingernails were dirty because sex was considered dirty.

If that was what they were going for it was overkill. Plus the appeal of Drac is his sex appeal. Even without that he was still disgusting. The actor was miscast.
