You'd have trouble finding it on a map with a magnifying glass! As an honorary Van Burener-er-er, let me provide some context that I suspect will shed some light on this girl. Van Buren is a low income factory town a few miles from the Oklahoma border. There's good things about it. Everyone's thrilled to meet outsiders. There's relatively little crime. The main street is two blocks long and at the town diner everybody knows your name. On the other hand formal education is scary bad, there's nothing to do so people pick up stupid habits, and teen pregnancy and loveless marriages seem rampant. If you grow up in Van Buren it's hard to just go off to college or land a corporate job because school there doesn't prepare you for anything other than drinking and having sex. My ex's step brother was working on the Whirlpool assembly line before he was out of high school and he'll probably retire there. My point being: Natalie is probably uneducated and uncultured. But if she became a "mactor" it's less likely because she grew up thinking that was her birthright than because that and the military are the only ways to escape the lives of your parents.
