COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Gov. Mark Sanford met with Homeland Security officials and US Senators about the state's port security on Monday.

But in about 45 minutes, state Republican leaders will hold a phone conference to decide where the party stands on the Sanford issue.

After nearly two weeks since Sanford told reporters about his affair with a woman in Argentina, the state's Republican party plans to issue a statement.

Many say the governor ruined any chances he had of making a run for the White House in two years.

Just as many, like Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler, think the governor also ruined any chance to lead, especially if his party turns against him.

"If a political party voted a no confidence in their governor, I think it would weaken him considerably, but quite frankly, Governor Sanford is so weak right now that I don't think it will make much difference to him," said Fowler.

In the past several days, many state Republicans asked Sanford to resign. Since then, those requests have died down.

"He's working on his family; I know people will even think that's improbable, but he's working on family and he wants to make things right with South Carolina, so the question is, can he redeem himself?" said former Sanford appointee Clarence Davis.

Davis says he has no idea what the state GOP will decide to say publically about Sanford. He says there's still time for the governor to make things right with voters.

"You're not talking about somebody who is not a hard worker, you're not talking about somebody who is not really smart. You're not talking about somebody who can't be laser focused in what he does, but he is focused on rebuilding his family and he has to refocus on rebuilding confidence of the state of South Carolina," said Davis.

"Of course it always helps when the other side is weak and I'm pleased that the Republican Party is in shambles, of course. I am not pleased for the state of South Carolina that our governor has shown himself to be so weak and ineffective," said Fowler.

State Republican party officials have that teleconference planned for 7pm Monday.

Following the call, we can expect some sort of unified statement on the state GOP's stance and the governor.
