For some reason, I thought it was a play on "hyphy." I suppose "Syphy" would look like a poor choice.

I heard about this. There are two reasons for the change.
1. The Publicity Reason aka What They're Telling People: They're changing the name to disassociate the channel from strictly science fiction and embrace fantasy and adventure programming as well. 2. The Real Reason: They wanted to copyright their name and legally they could not copyright "SciFi" because it was already in use by other companies. So they changed the spelling to create a sellable brand name. |
