I don't think that Jimmy is a red herring. Jimmy is Wakefield's accomplice is the simplest explanation. If Wakefield had died in the last episode then it would be possible that Jimmy is a red herring. The problem now is that Wakefield is still alive and is still a major distraction for the next episode. Wakefield will dominate the next episode until he is finally killed which I expect to happen in the second half of the episode.

What I expect will happen:

Wakefield will kill a few more people until he is finally killed by Jimmy while Wakefield is trying to kill Abby (thus saving her a 2nd time). All the survivors will be relieved and the viewers will think that the evidence against Jimmy was a red herring because he killed Wakefield. Jimmy will take Abby to the Totem Pole one last time before she is to leave the island. He will attempt to kill her and the episode will end. In the last episode, Abby will manage to kill Jimmy and will end up heatbroken and emotionally devastated because she trusted him completely and had strong feelings for him.

Rationale:

The flashbacks in episode 7 focused on the relationship between Abby and Jimmy. He saved her from Wakefield but she didn't even bother to say goodbye to him after her father sent her off the Island. This caused Jimmy to go off the deep end and provides the motive for him to partner with Wakefield.

Whether or not Abby is really Wakefield's child, Wakefield thinks that she is. He didn't specify the gender of the child in his diary because he/she hadn't been born at the time he was put away by Sheriff Mills. He said in his diary that he was going to return and take back what was his (meaning his child). Since we have seen him on the show, he hasn't made an attempt to see anyone other than Abby (through Jimmy).

Many think that Henry is Wakefield's accomplice, but it he knew that Wakefield was alive then why would he have spent so much time and effort helping Abby dig up Wakefield's coffin in order to determine whether or not Wakefield was dead. That doesn't make any sense.

We will find out in two weeks but Jimmy being the accomplice is the best fit with the story that has been presented so far. It also provides the biggest shock to the audience because Abby and Jimmy have been lovey dovey during the entire show.
