Jenny Sanford said Friday that she warned her husband not to travel to Argentina last week to visit his mistress.

In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, the first lady of South Carolina said that her husband agreed to end the affair in January after she found a letter from the governor to his Argentine mistress.

When the governor recently informed his wife that he would be leaving the state, Jenny Sanford said, he told her that he needed time alone to write. She then warned him not to visit the woman in Argentina and said she was shocked to find out that he had.

Jenny Sanford added later in an interview with reporters that her husband's career "is not a concern of mine."

"He's gonna have to worry about that, and I'm going to worry about my family and the character of my children," she said.

When news broke Monday that the governor was missing, Jenny first relayed the story that the governor needed time away from his family in order to do some writing. When his staff later said he was hiking the Appalachian Trial, she then dropped the writing story and also said the governor was hiking.

After watching her husband's press conference at the state Capitol from their home in Charleston on Wednesday, South Carolina's first lady walked a statement out to the media awaiting outside.

"I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage," it read in part. "I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband's infidelity, I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage."

After holding his first Cabinet meeting since admitting to the affair, the governor said Friday during a short media availability that he is "just trying to survive today."

"Jenny has been absolutely magnanimous and gracious as a wonderful Christian woman in this process," he said.
