San Fran was my favo season, partly because of the AIDS storyline, I must admit (it educated a lot of youngsters out there, which I think is a good thing), but also for my two faves ever, Pam and Judd. I just like intelligent people on these shows... which ended circa Las Vegas Part 1. |

Fun fact: I made the quarterfinals in the selection process for Real World San Fran. Went out to LA and the whole thing.

Uh, no. He was a brave person who taught the viewership a lot about HIV at a time when everyone thought it was the ebola virus and we were all going to die.

Not to try to whore myself, but I made a ranking thread of the Real World seasons, and I think this list is for the most part accurate. Of course, it conflicts
with some people's own opinions, but if you check out the ranking thread, then you'll understand my reasons.

You guys have to put your minds in 1994, when the show was on -- it wasn't exactly the most enlightened of times. We had TLC wearing condoms on their
clothes and that was about it. What Pedro was doing was really shocking. I was a kid in Illinois at the time, and just seeing a gay person, who had HIV but
didn't seem to be a demonic hellbeast that infected everyone he breathed on, was a revelation for me. Probably lots of others, too.
There's a weird backlash in the gay community with the younger gays. I've noticed a lot of weird hate for drag queens, Pedro, Madonna, ACTUP, etc -- it's pretty clear they want to divorce themselves completely with the movements that have gone before.

On the show, Pedro was very condescending and unyielding at times. He was very preachy, as well. AND it was, as tiger said, an extremely brave move on his
part. Pedro was doing it for his life, while Puck was doing what he did to make a scene. Personally, and I suspect I am in the minority around this place on
this matter, I prefer Pedro's overearnestness to Puck's faux nihilism. Again, though, that season was really about the supporting players.
I rank SF as my fave, followed by the original NY season and then probably Boston. Most of the rest of them blur together. Las Vegas is the quagmire.

You know I really couldnt believe that people could hate Pedro but I did watch the entire season and I understand it. His illness aside, he could be entitled
at times. Judd even said that the reason Puck and Pedro did not get along is because they were both divas. That was put perfectly, Pedro could be a diva. On
the other hand I have to give him his respect because he went out and educated youths about AIDS and ways to prevent it. I was very young watching San
Fransisco and when I re-watched it in reruns years later I was becoming sexually active with other gay men. Had I not seen Pedro's story I may have not
been smart enough to ALWAYS use protection. Since I was educated I have to have some kind of respect for Pedro, flaws and all. On the other hand I am also a
Puck fan because boy does he know how to make a show good, case in point Battle of the Sexes.

Good for you, BB -- I did some hustling back in the day when I was a homeless teen, and am so damned lucky that I didn't get anything because condoms just
weren't something people used in the '80s. I saw enough people get sick and die that I'm glad to hear anyone say that they take care of themselves.
And good on Pedro for getting anyone to be careful. Yeah, the odd thing is that he was probably someone I wouldn't like if he hadn't become who he was,
but tragedy often brings our character to its sharpest point.

I don't agree with the seasons but I agree with your rankings of the people.
