It's very interesting that so very many of the protesters in the hundreds of photos I have seen are carrying/wearing messages written in English. Clearly they know they are being seen and heard around the world.

I can only hope that these Iranian people can oust those mullahs and ayatollah's, fucking religious bastards deserve 500 lashes each. They're the
reason why the country is such a shithole.

This thing has effectively shut down the country right? Really what could they do if it went on for another two weeks or a month? I'd actually be
interested in seeing that, everyday hundreds of thousands of people in the streets raising hell. If the media and international support lasts as long as they
do, chances are some very promising gains could be made. Or the streets will run with the blood of sexay green peeps.
Goddamn this thing is sooooo romantic. <3 MakePaulaCry, that vid you posted way back was so horribly awesome. Took me right back. In fact, I had the same "infraction" one of the women had about the head covering being too sheer. Ugh, the way that hellbeast was urging them to go inside her bus??? <scary> |

OMG, I love all the ignorant people cheering for the people of Iran and supporting the alternate candidate who....cough...still says that the holocaust never
existed. Don't be mislead by the "beautiful" Persians, they still have hatred in their hearts. Honestly, will people ever read up on the issues
or do they just look at the pretty pictures?

Not water-cannoned, not attacked by dogs, not hauled off to the county pokey on disorderly conduct charges. Dead or in prison for a long, long time. There is absolutely no comparison between Iran today and the US in any era. Iranians don't have a 1st Amendment, or a 2nd Amendment (which would come in handy right about now), or anything even resembling our Bill of Rights at all. They do have Sharia law, and a military which is willing to slaughter dissenters in support of that law. Their "elected" officials all serve a theocracy that is equally willing to order that slaughter. It's not cynicism, it's the fucking truth. |

So, even should the army decide a coup was in order, it's far from a certainty that they could pull it off. More likely every officer deemed disloyal would vanish in the dead of the night along with his entire family. |

But so did the leaders of the Soviet Union and every country in the Eastern Bloc when they fell. Ultimately the protesters are going to need the help of internal breakdowns amongst the ranks of the clerics and the military forces to give them the opportunity and indications out of Iran is that there has been some dissension in the ranks in both cases. I don't necessarily think removing Khamenei or Ahmadinejad will happen. All I'm saying is it COULD happen and I'm glad these people are trying to make it happen just in the off chance it succeeds as there probably won't ever be a better opportunity for this to happen. I mean Monday's rally was estimated to have 3 MILLION people marching in it by the mayor of Tehran and the population of Tehran is only 7 MILLION. I don't think the Supreme Leader has enough forces to slaughter 3 million people. |

memyselfandi wrote:Those 3 million people don't have guns, and it isn't necessary to kill them all. A couple hundred bodies stacked up in front of Tehran University would keep the rest of the rabble in line. If they don't comply, more people get added to the pile. After the bloodshed, thousands of people get re-educated in the school of busting rocks. Everybody else lays low. Iran is not the US. We can talk all the shit we want and MAYBE get something changed, without fear of getting either locked up or shot. The very young Iranian public is going to be waiting for at least 15 more years (letting the old guard die off) before their voices are even heard. In the meantime, they'll be taking their chances every time they post a Twitter update. |

When have I said Iran is exactly the same as the US? You keep repeating that as if Americans are the only human beings capable of wanting and striving to get
more freedom.
These people are screaming "Death to the dictator!" and "My dead brother, I will get your vote back!." Clearly a lot of Iranians are ready and willing to risk their lives for their cause the same way a previous generation of Iranians did 30 years ago in deposing the Shah. If the 70 percent of Iranians under 30 don't act now to fight back and give it their best shot, I'm guessing they will be waiting a lot longer than 15 years for freedom. |

You're right, in that Iran isn't like the US. It's not like they have a culture that emphasis martyrdom. So that blatantly defiling protesters
killed by the state (as in Harold's secenario), wouldn't lessen the resolve of the resistance. That's pretty much how the Shah was originally
overthrown. The more brutal the crackdown, the worse it will probably eventually be for the state. The bigger question is how much resolve the opposition
leadership has, and whether they will accept a limited governing role, in exchange for acquiescence.
I don't know that this protest is entirely reliant on one person or group anymore, and there doesn't seem to be a strong individual driving force really, but it seems to have definitely changed how Iranian society looks at their current government.
