Watched Confidence Man and Solitary. I had forgotten how many things some of these first season episodes established. For one things, the two episodes established the basic Sayid conflict: is he a good man who has done bad things, or is he a killer/torturer.

Another thing is that, at the time (first time through) I liked Kate's character and couldn't stand Sawyer. Now that we've had five seasons, I like Sawyer and don't really like Kate. So knowing what comes later puts a completely different spin on Sawyer's behavior in these early episodes. Like when Sawyer comes after Kate to tell her Jack has been buried (and was going to tell her), but then she got uber-pissy and he didn't tell her.

And the issue of whether it was OK for Sayid to shoot young Ben starts here with whether it is OK for Sayid to torture Sawyer to save Shannon. (But then awesome Sun saved her anyway!!). Kate was consistent at least, opposing both the torture and letting Ben die.

As the the two continuity issues (Sayid = Nadia dead; Danielle = saw no one)

I can't remember what happens in all the later Sayid-flashback episodes, but he does say by the end of the episode that he's hoping she's still alive.

And I tend to see the Danielle issue as a big direction change with the series. I don't think the writers were completely certain what Smokey/the Monster was at this point, and then when they decided, they had to go back and work the established Danielle story in as best they could. Although it's also possible she's just lying to Sayid, or has forgotten exactly what happened over the last 16 years (she is a little crazy :-)
