Geoff Rush in Exit the King was brilliant. Loved the costuming, set and direction for that one too.

Where were Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin tonight? Even though they weren't nominated, they should have been presenters. Loved Will Farrell's comment about how "Godot" has been mispronounced for over 50 years! We always called it Guh' doh. God' oh is just too obvious a pronunciation.

The sound and direction tonight was horrible. Is it always this bad? I mean when you can't see who died, but you show the chorus singing to honor them it just doesn't make any sense.

A few random thoughts on tonight:

1) Why is it that we only got to see 30 seconds of the nominated plays but got 5 minutes of Mama Mia, Legally Blonde and Jersey Boys?

2) Why didn't it occur to someone on the Billy Elliot production team that allowing Middle Billy to sport a Dorothy Hamill cut was not the best way to make him look like a working class British bloke?

3) What was with all of NPH's sex remarks?

4) Other than Frank Langella and James Gandolfini did any men appear heterosexual?

yeah, what was that? one, two lines, tops, from each of the plays? that was pathetic. and whoever was in charge of mikes & mixing needs to be run out of town on a rail along with whoever is responsible for those touring musical numbers. good lord, that Mama Mia! number was like bad community theatre with a cast of understudies, choreographed by my poor aunt sally.

i thought everything else was pretty good but those were just appallingly bad. the opening number was actually pretty thrilling.

fave moment had to be Liza forgetting the envelope and the stagehand having to run it out to her so she could actually announce the winner.

well, that, and NPH's closing number. FABOO.

Too much to take in tonight. Definitely one of the better presentations, with a lot of train wreck moments.

Hair came off the best. Yes, they really are all over the audience like that. Play your cards right, and you could get a phone number after the show...

My understanding is that back in the day of the original production when they performers were actual Hippies the audience suffered because the performers really smelled bad!

I think A Chorus Line might have been an original idea. You are right though, it's rare. I've seen six Broadway musicals, or touring companies of Broadway Musicals - Cats, Nine, Les Miz, Chorus Line, Evita, and Rent - and except for Chorus Line, they are all based on something else. Andrew Lloyd Webber, in particular, does not have a single original idea at all.

Some of the Jason Robert Brown musicals are original ideas but those shows don't hit very big, despite being amazing.

Horrible example but is Starlight Express an original idea? I can't think of what that would be based on. Song & Dance (the Tell Me On A Sunday story half) is definitely original but that's more of a concept than a real story.

Because, the American viewing audience are Broadway morons and those shows sell tickets while on the road. 90% of the audience had no idea who was even nominated, but they said "OH, DANCING QUEEN!!! I LOVE THAT SONG!".

If Next to Normal goes on tour, it will play to 40% capacity.

But fucking "Mamma Mia" will be sold out for years to come.

Funny Girl is based on the true story of Fanny Brice, Oklahoma is based on a play, and Avenue Q could be considered a parody of Sesame Street. That one is iffier but the first two are definitey not original ideas.

eta: Carousel is based on a play too but I can't remember what it's called.

Pajama Game: Based on the novel 7 1/2 Cents

Oklahoma: Based on play Green Grow the Lilacs

Carousel: Based on play Lilliom

ETA: Rodgers and Hammerstien wrote two original musicals: Allegro and Me and Juliet. Ever heard of them? Case closed.
